Vox published this interesting article on Cinderella today: https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/201...

Here's a quote from the piece, by Jack Zipes (of course. you can't write a fairy tale article without Zipes making an appearance.):

“In our brains, there’s a place that we retain stories or narratives or things that are important to the survival of the human species,” he says, “and these stories enable us to deal with conflicts that come up time and time again that have never been resolved.”

In Cinderella, Zipes says, the conflict is: “How do you mix families?”

I agree in part with that, though I also think the reason people love Cinderella so is more complicated than that single question.

What do y'all think?

Mary Catelli | 1135 comments It is certainly true that it's oversimplified in modern culture. There are Cinderella variants where she succeeds by first going through a kind and unkind girls episode, and some where she makes a foolish bargain with a Rumpelstilskin figure.
