Sans | 722 comments I'm pretty ruthless when it comes to kicking a book or series to the curb. A lot of it has to do with the writing quality or use of 1st person POV. It takes a LOT for me to stick with 1st person. Just a pet peeve of mine. I'm gonna have to weed through my dnf and "this should be burned in a garbage fire" books and get them up here.

Sans | 722 comments Elder Races by Thea Harrison

Dragon Bound (Elder Races, #1) by Thea Harrison

The first couple books were really good! Then something happened and everyone started to annoy me and the plot just got too ridiculous for me to keep up with.

Sans | 722 comments Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

I know I'm the statistical outlier on this, but WOW, I couldn't even finish the first book. 1st person and a completely unsympathetic narrator. I just couldn't force myself through it.

Sans | 722 comments The Mighty Thor by Jason Aaron

The Mighty Thor, Volume 1 Thunder in Her Veins by Jason Aaron

This was actually really good but my mom was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer which, over the past 25 years, has spread to her lungs and other organs. And is the same diagnosis Jane was given. And I just couldn't finish it. Hit far too close to home.

Sans | 722 comments Anything by Catherine Anderson

Baby Love (Kendrick/Coulter/Harrigan, #1) by Catherine Anderson

I was so into her Kendrick/Coulter/Harrington series years ago but the rancher set just isn't my cuppa these days. She also started to get preachy and religious and as an agnostic, I'm not here for that.

Sans | 722 comments New 52 Batwoman

Batwoman Elegy by Greg Rucka

The first couple of books were SO. GOOD. Then DC retracted their promise to let A Thing happen and the story hit the skids and just was not worth the time and money I was putting into it.

Sans | 722 comments Love By Numbers by Sarah MacLean

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers, #1) by Sarah MacLean

The first book was ok but something went wrong in book 2 and I refused to finish it. That something being poor writing and bad characters.

Sans | 722 comments Runaway Brides by Kaki Warner

Heartbreak Creek (Runaway Brides #1) by Kaki Warner

There was a period of time where I was reading only historical romances and had branched out into Western romances as well. It was a somewhat short-lived period of time and when I got around to reading book 2 in this series, I wasn't in the mood for this setting anymore.

Sans | 722 comments Nightwing (2016)
Nightwing, Vol. 1 Better Than Batman by Tim Seeley

This got kicked around by several writers, half of whom had no idea how to actually write Dick Grayson. Then King was allowed to Do That Bad Thing, and it's just completely awful now.

I love my son, but I can't stomach this crap storyline any longer.

Captain America Steve Rogers, Vol. 1 Hail Hydra by Nick Spencer

Two words: Hydra Cap.

Sans | 722 comments Bevelstoke by Julia Quinn

The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever (Bevelstoke, #1) by Julia Quinn

I didn't enjoy the first book at all. Since I have so many other books to read, I decided to not continue this series.

Sans | 722 comments Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon

The first book didn't wow me. I'm fine watching the TV series to find out what happens.

Read:
A Rogue by Any Other Name (The Rules of Scoundrels, #1) by Sarah MacLean

I just don't enjoy MacLean's storytelling. Her heroes are all assholes and her heroines are all stubborn misfits and none of it is fun for me.

See comment above.

Sans | 722 comments Justice League Dark (2018)

Justice League Dark, Vol. 1 The Last Age of Magic by James Tynion IV

I'm not a gore-horror fan and I don't like where this story goes so I'm dropping it from my reading and pull lists.

Sans | 722 comments New 52 Justice League Dark

Justice League Dark, Volume 1 In the Dark by Peter Milligan

Not for me.

Sans | 722 comments Shazam! by Geoff Johns

Shazam! Vol. 1 The Seven Magic Lands Part 1 by Geoff Johns

I was skimming the floppies, I couldn't be bothered to actually read them.

Sans | 722 comments First Comes Love by Amelia Grey

The Earl Next Door (First Comes Love, #1) by Amelia Grey

I skimmed the last 50 pages just to get through it. I didn't care for the writing style so I won't be reading any more of these.

Sans | 722 comments Southern Reach by Jeff VanderMeer

Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1) by Jeff VanderMeer

Problem 1: first person POV. Problem 2: I hated the movie. Result: I'm not going to finish the books.

message 20: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments Harry Potter by JK Rowling

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling

Confession: I've never been able to get through book 5 and I've seen the later movies only once each.

Sans | 722 comments Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris

Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris

The first four books were good, then it just got ridiculous. And I didn't like the TV show.

Sans | 722 comments Batgirl (2016)

Batgirl, Volume 1 Beyond Burnside by Hope Larson

I tried reading this several times the past three years and, frankly, I'm more excited about the shelf space that will be freed up when I sell this series off than I am about any of the plots. I'm officially DNFing.

message 23: by Sans (new)

Sans | 722 comments New 52 Supergirl

Supergirl, Vol. 1 Last Daughter of Krypton by Michael Green

Kara is far too immature and judgey for my taste. I thought she might get better later on but all the crossovers with Superman and Superboy showed me she has zero character growth. Not interested in wasting my time on this.

finished:
Superman Dawnbreaker (DC Icons, #4) by Matt de la Pena

unread:
Wonder Woman Warbringer (DC Icons, #1) by Leigh Bardugo Batman Nightwalker (DC Icons, #2) by Marie Lu Catwoman Soulstealer (DC Icons, #3) by Sarah J. Maas

The Superman book was so bad that I lost all interest and confidence in the ones remaining and sold them over the weekend.

Sans | 722 comments Vera Stanhope by Ann Cleaves
The Crow Trap (Vera Stanhope, #1) by Ann Cleeves

When I write, I flesh out my characters, give them extensive backstories, etc. Friends I bounce ideas off of like to joke that I've named the fern owned by the MC's great-aunt-twice-removed. But I don't put the full history in the actual story because the reader would find it unnecessary and boring. And this book is proof of that. I'll stick with the TV show.

Sans | 722 comments Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim

Scavenge the Stars (Scavenge the Stars, #1) by Tara Sim

I've never really liked The Count of Monte Cristo and not even a queer/gender bent version isn't enough to hold my interest.

Sans | 722 comments Timeless Fairy Tales by K.M. Shea

Beauty and the Beast (Timeless Fairy Tales, #1) by K.M. Shea The Wild Swans (Timeless Fairy Tales, #2) by K.M. Shea

I've tried to read three more of these now and keep putting them down or DNFing them, so I think that's a sign. Whatever magic happened in the first two books just did not carry forward in the rest of the series for me.

This is a tricky type of series to dnf for me since each book is written by a different author. Good to be aware of that first one though, whenever I finally get around to checking the series out.

The Black Gryphon (Valdemar Mage Wars #1) by Mercedes Lackey

Life is too short for bad 90's fantasy.

Sans | 722 comments An Ember in the Ashes

An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1) by Sabaa Tahir

I'm sure this is a great book and under other circumstances I'd be all over the Ancient Rome-esque setting but at this point in my life, I don't have the emotional energy for these kind of kill-or-be-killed kind of YA books.

Yeah I had 4 books of this series but IDK. Flipping through it I don't think it's really my thing either. So off they just went.

I liked the first book but I don't have any real interest in finishing the series.
