It is 1915 and Mary Russell is fifteen years old and living in the Sussex Downs with her hated aunt. Mary literally stumbles upon Sherlock Holmes one day as he studies bees and finds that he is her neighbour. The pair strike up a surprising friendship and Holmes discovers that Mary has as remarkable an intellect as his own. Along with her formal education at Oxford, Holmes undertakes to teach Mary from his own experience and the master and apprentice solve crimes together with Dr Watson, Mycroft and Mrs Hudson in the background.
I didn't think I was going to enjoy this as much as I did because I really love Sherlock Holmes. However, the writing was good and the mysteries were engaging and solved properly with no loose ends. I think I'll try the next one as well.
