Could have done without the language - noticed that it was pretty much just one character of the book using it.

Hi Brianon! Sorry it took so long to reply back to you. The nominee books are selected by a group of 10 librarians who are on the Reader's Choice committee. We look at reviews from different sources and also sometimes get suggestions from other library employees and the public. We try to find books that will have wide appeal and also introduce people to genres that they might not otherwise pick up--basically a "good read" that you want to tell other people about. We also try to choose authors that are new or not as well known.
We also have other library employees who read books from our list of potential nominees and then they vote on whether or not it meets the above criteria. Our list usually has around 250 titles on it, so there is a lot of reading involved. : )
