Felicia | 15003 comments Written in his distinctively dazzling manner, Oscar Wilde’s story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is the author’s most popular work. The tale of Dorian Gray’s moral disintegration caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, but though Wilde was attacked for the novel’s corrupting influence, he responded that there is, in fact, “a terrible moral in Dorian Gray.” Just a few years later, the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde’s homosexual liaisons, which resulted in his imprisonment. Of Dorian Gray’s relationship to autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.”

That's valid. I thought the ending was really poetic, it felt like it really came full circle.

Just to address your comment about Henry, this whole book is low-key gay. It was actually used as evidence against Oscar Wilde when he was tried for sodomy because of all the homoerotic subtext. There are definitely some strong anti-women vibes that I'm getting from a lot of the characters.

Gracie Taylor | 57 comments I’m starting it today I’m quite nervous because I’ve never read any classic books before other than those done at school.

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts about it!

Gracie Taylor | 57 comments I’m finding it quite hard to get in to it, I think it’s because I went in blind but I will keep at it

Gracie Taylor | 57 comments I do feel like Dorian Gray is quite vain as a character and quite selfish.

Gracie Taylor | 57 comments I do love the writing of Oscar Wilde I just couldn’t get in to the story as much as I would like to.

Gracie Taylor | 57 comments I like the complexity of the characters tho, I feel like if the story was longer and the build up had more suspense I would have been able to get further in to it.
