Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 772 comments I'm splitting up the bookshelf based on subgenres so the books are easier to find. I wanted to know what kind of subgenres are you looking for among the science fiction works?

For example we have cyberpunk, dystopian, etc.

What are some subgenres you'd like to see make it to our bookshelf?

Leonie (leonierogers) I believe there's a category called planetary romance which isn't what it sounds like. I'll find a link once I'm back on my laptop.

Basically it's set on another world and not about spaceships...

Gary | 1472 comments Here's Wikipedia's category for Science Fiction genres:

We probably won't need all of those....

Leonie (leonierogers) And planetary romance - which after looking at Gary's link, looks a lot like Science Fiction Adventure. (Which is a much less weird name.)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 772 comments I think I've been mislabeling some of my reads on my own bookshelves. Genres are such tricky things.

Mary Catelli Planetary romance is action and adventure set on one planet. The "romance" coming from the original romance genre -- the medieval chivalric romance -- and so modern day romance, aka a love story, is unnecessary.

But not absent. Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars Series, Edgar Rice Burroughs is perhaps archetypal. It differs from Space Opera chiefly by Space Opera's involvement in, well, space.

Mary Catelli Near-future SF.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 772 comments That's interesting. On my personal bookshelves I've always labeled a space adventures that are no space operas as simple space adventure and there would include the planetary romances as well as near-future SF that happens in space. When I have some time I'll probably have to revamp our bookshelf as well. This discussion is very helpful, thank you all!
