I wrote another folklore related piece! Members will really like these books, particularly Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia which releases in a few days and Sabrina & Corina: Stories. We read Mouthful of Birds as a buddy read.

Here's the post: http://www.bronzevillebee.com/2019/07...

Yay! I wish I had it in hardcover; it's such a pretty cover.

Congratulations Margaret!
I really want to read Gods of Jade and Shadow!
I really liked Certain Dark Things, and less so Signal to Noise, although I found the premise very original.
I read a few stories by Samanta Schweblin and although short story collections aren't my cup of tea, I agree she is very talented.

I don't agree 100% about Allende's work being "dreamy and nostalgic though. How many of her books have you read? I think she is definitely feminist ( even the " ick " part in Eva Luna could be considered feminist for the time period) and she definitely can be subversive.

Other Latina authors worth mentioning are Cristina García , Dreaming in Cuban, Guadalupe Garcia McCall author of Summer of the Mariposas and Ana Castillo author of So Far from God

Anna-Marie McLemore has a new book out called Dark and Deepest Red

I had to buy it in hardback -- could not resist the cover.

The cover of Gods of Jade and Shadow is so lovely. I wish I had the hardback!

I've read 3 of Allende's novels, and all three seem dreamy and nostalgic, including Eva Luna! I do agree that her work can be feminist and subversive, but not in the same in your face way as modern writers. Her style of feminism is easier to take than say, Carmen Maria Machado's.

I just noticed there's a typo for Isabel Allende's name! Oh no! I'm emailing the editor right now. Sheesh, I hate it when that happens!
