Geri Have you played this type of team challenge before, Leslie Ann? This is my first time. I read through the rules and think I understand most of it.

Hi Laura! It should be fun. I am glad there are no page points. I need a break from big books!

message 9: by Geri (new)

Geri Talking books, here are the number of books our team has committed to.

Leslie Ann - 6-8
Camilla - 10
Kaley - 7
Geri - 10

The total: 33-35. It gives us room to do a few extra if we have time. And still remain below our 40 upper limit to be “crater” level.

I haven’t. I have read the rules and think , I get it. I will reread again to be sure. I like the idea of keeping track in the spreadsheet. I have Started to look for books for the countdown. I do have one for published in the 1950’s.

Leslie Ann | 941 comments How do all of you feel about editing the spreadsheet? We could all edit it if everyone feels comfortable .

message 13: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1976 comments Hi everyone!! Super excited about this challenge. It’s my first build-your-own-team challenge so I’m looking forward to seeing how this works.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1976 comments Leslie Ann wrote: "How do all of you feel about editing the spreadsheet? We could all edit it if everyone feels comfortable ."

I’m comfortable editing — I have been a team captain of a challenge in a different GR group that used spreadsheets and I've done a few of the recent individual challenges in this group that also used spreadsheets, so I’ve used them for GR a lot.

So I’m fine with everyone adding their own if that’s how we want to play it. Or if we decide we want to have just one person adding to the spreadsheet, that’s fine too.

message 15: by Geri (new)

Geri I am used to adding books to planning spreadsheets. If there isn’t any real difference, I am willing to add and edit my book info.

I will start researching books for the countdown tomorrow. I’ll make note of some books that will work.

Leslie Ann - Should we reserve a spot for tracking our books? Is that how it is usually done?

message 16: by Geri (new)

Geri I have searched for books to fulfill our countdown tasks. I have found a book for #10 I want to read. (Published on 10th of any month). I can do that one! I’ll wait to see what everyone else can do before I claim any others. I figured this one might be a difficult one to fulfill, so I searched for this first.

Perfect. I will do the 1950’s book and will wait till everyone has at least one before I pick something else.
Also I was thinking we could track in the spreadsheet?

Leslie Ann | 941 comments I don’t have permission to edit the ss. Do any of you?

Camilla | 1885 comments Hi everyone! I haven't played a build-your-own-team challenge before, but have participated in several team challenges, not as a captain though, so I'm happy if somebody else wants that job. Fairly comfortable with adding my reads to the SS, although I'm by no means a sheet wizard.

AFAIK you all know each other from the current Wheel team, just a short intro: I'm Camilla from Finland, I read mostly thrillers, horror, scifi and fantasy, but pretty much everything if needed (not fond of poems, westerns, or erotica, though). I work as a school psychologist, but still on holiday for a couple of weeks. Looking forward to playing with you!

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1976 comments Hi Camilla!

My name is Kaley. I live in the state of Indiana in the USA with my fiance and our two dogs and new kitten. I read a lot of YA and contemporary romance, and I work in marketing.

message 22: by Kaley (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1976 comments I have a book that could work for #3, "that is part of what was originally a planned trilogy, but became a longer series (can include .5 books added later)"

I know that City of Bones is the first book in a series that was originally supposed to be a trilogy. The author mentions it on her website in the FAQ here (https://www.cassandraclare.com/faq/ho...) so I assume that would be "proof" enough for the reason.

message 23: by Geri (new)

Geri Hi Camilla! You will fit in perfectly with our team!

Kaley, great choice for #3. I loved that series!

I know that City of Bones..."

That's great, Kaley! I was sort of wondering how to find out whether a longer series was intended to be only a trilogy. Sure, I get the .5 books, but otherwise.

I'll have a look at the countdown tasks - I assume they will be the tasks for the first two weeks? - and see what I have probably tomorrow.

message 25: by Geri (new)

Geri Hey Team! I did want to mention that I can read a book for X. So we should attempt to spell out the word “six” from our tasks list when we do group 3.

message 26: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann | 941 comments Safezone stage
Once your team has read for the countdown and jumped out of the deadly substance, you have some choices while you are in the safe zone These are grouped into 3:
1) complete a spell-it-out of the floor substance (round one is L-A-V-A) for 30 points per letter. All letters in this group must be spelled out to get the points.
Crater: you need two letters from LAVA to be a book another team has read or a prior NBRC BOM

When we get to this stage - I can read an L from the BOM

message 27: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1885 comments Okay, I've had a look at the countdown tasks and can easily do some of the following:
8. that has a carnivorous animal on the cover Shiftless
7. written by an author who has published at least seven books (as listed on Goodreads) nothing specific at this point, have several
5. that was first published in the 1950s Untouched by Human Hands (but if Leslie Ann wants to do this, I really don't mind, just FYI that I have something easily available, if we need it)

Nine characters and debut novel are doable as well.

I find the narrator task (4) to be difficult, so if somebody else has something for that, it would be great.

I didn't take a look at the Group 2 tasks yet. Can do from Group 3:
i. Read a book with red writing on the cover where the title contains the letters L-A-V-A (doesn't need to be in that order) Value of Jade
ii. Read a book with a red cover (>50%) where the author contains the letters H-O-T (doesn't need to be in that order) Lured in the Woods

Did I understand the rules correctly in that we need to read at least two letters - since we're on the crater level - that have been prior BOMs or been read by another team (I assume during the challenge?)?

Yes, that is how I understand it too. Also, the entire word has to be spelled out to get points.

I have a book that fits the at least 4 narrators task.

Safezone 3: used Yum Yum from The Cat Who Sniffed Glue for Y char. Yum Yum is a cat and not a speaking character.
You will have a chance to regenerate in round 4.
