Susan, I can't believe that it's almost August either. The dates on this week's update surprised me a little. Time sure goes by quickly.
Connie, I reread The Handmaid's Tale last year. I like Margaret Atwood's writing and this one is no exception. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it.
I had a good reading week. I finished They Were Counted and Bastard Out of Carolina and Women Of The Outback.
They Were Counted follows 2 cousins as unrest begins in Hungary in pre-WWI days. It's the first of a trilogy that I will continue.
Bastard Out of Carolina is a disturbing story of a dysfunctional family. Well written and shows how such a hidden life can lead to self-loathing and shame.
Women of the Outback is an interesting collection of women living in Australia's Outback today. They live lives of isolation and hard work. They are remarkable people with fantastic outlooks. I enjoyed these stories.
I've now started reading New Boy, which I received last year from Rainey. It's drawn me into the story in the first few pages. Thank you, Rainey.
I'm also reading Bookclub Social: A Reader's Guide to Online Book Clubs, which so far is an interesting analysis of on-line bookclubs, what they offer their members and their significance in today's world. It's interesting so far.

This week I read Call Your Daughter Home. It was a quick, engrossing read but some of the author's choices around race made me uncomfortable. Some friends have been really loving this one, so I'm keeping quiet and just letting them enjoy it. :-) I gave it 3 stars.
I'm currently reading Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation, which is about a massive fire in a gay bar in New Orleans that caused many deaths. My current fiction read is Copperhead. I loved Zentner's first novel but was less enthused about his second. So far, this one seems like it will be a good one, though some of the material is rough as the novel centres around a young man whose brother is in jail for killing two black men in a disputed hate crime.

I finished reading The Golden Son and listening to Chase Darkness with Me: How One True-Crime Writer Started Solving Murders and I enjoyed both! Currently reading Station Eleven and I am enjoying it. This was one of the books for my in-person book club and some of the members hated it. It reminded me a bit of The Stand, but set in Canada.
Enjoy the weekend!
Greetings everyone!
@Connie - i am feeling like i might need to do a third read of Handmaid's Tale too... nice to be refreshed before the sequel!
@Petra - some heavy reading! I will be interested in hearing what you think of the book club social. I love my book clubs and feel like books are a great way to connect us and spark conversations!
@Susan - some serious tomes for you too this week!
@May - I liked Station Eleven too. Timely as this one is supposed to become a 10 episode series.
This week, i finished reading The Dead Zone which I had read a couple of decades ago. it was amazing how much i forgot and like always, King is such an amazing character author. I picked it up in relation to some of his comments comparing the politician in the book to Trump. Now i need to watch the movie!
In audio, I finished The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore which read more like a YA book. It was ok and was read in preparation for book club where we are all choosing our own books from the Evergreen Awards shortlist.
Now, i am in the midst of All Things Consoled: A Daughter's Memoir which is also from the Evergreen List and is Elizabeth Hay's memoir of looking after her aging parents.
I am on holidays this week and since it will be a staycation, i am hoping to get some more reading in!!
