Any hopes of a quiet morning had vanished the moment had Sam roused from her light, restless sleep. She’d managed a few hours, curled up in the shade of the palms but had awoken not long after dawn, freezing cold and aching from the day before. It had taken her a moment to recall just what had happened, rising to a chorus of bird song and the hollowed out skeleton of the wreckage had left her confused at first, at least until she was met by the crushing realisation that it hadn’t all been some horrible dream. Sam has set to work immediately, if only because it kept her from dwelling on the depravity of the situation. She wasn’t the only one awake, and she’d sent groups off to scour the wreckage for supplies and search the nearby jungle for fruit to eat. For some reason people had chosen to listen to her, perhaps it was the badge, or the gun, or maybe it was just the fact that people wanted to help out in anyway they could.
By the time mid-morning rolled around, people were chowing down on mangoes, grilled fish and the remains of the snack compartment from the plane. She’d kept herself busy organising supplies, handing out bottles of water, and getting to know the other survivors on a first name basis. It seemed like the right thing to do, who knew how long they’d be stuck here. When Theo arrived, having spent the morning consoling survivors and scavenging the wreckage for medical supplies, Sam finally sat down for breakfast. They didn’t talk much as they shared pieces of fruit and took half a sandwich each from one of the coolers Theo had found on the plane. She was just wiping the crumbs off her jeans when a young girl came flying up the beach, shouting at the top of her lungs about two guys trying to kill each other. Sam was on her feet immediately, Theo rising beside her as the two of them raced down the sand to where the two figures were grappling. They were joined halfway down by Jackson, an army veteran who’d been administering first aid for much of the morning.
Sam was grateful to have them there, she knew who it would be the moment she started running, and was hardly surprised to find out that it was Johnny locked in a fight with another man in military fatigues. After his tirade that morning, she had cursed herself for not keeping an eye on him. Theo and Jackson had helped to separate the two men, neither of whom were in particularly good shape, and Sam had given her best shot at reprimanding them. She’d been a little lost for words, there was nothing she could possibly say that could possibly deter them. They were trapped here, if people wanted to beat the living shit out of each other there was very little she could do about it. Thankfully Johnny had stalked off before anymore punches could be thrown, and when the marine too had left in the opposite direction, Sam had retreated back up the beach to take a moment to herself. Stood in the shade of the trees, she’d taken several deep breaths and was haphazardly running her hands through her hair when footsteps sounded behind her.
Sam turned sharply, and was relieved to see that it was in fact Theo and not someone else spoiling for a fight. She sighed and pushed her sweaty hair off her face. “Thanks for backing me up down there, I don’t know how I would have separated them otherwise.” Her blue green eyes were worrisome. “We’ve been here less than a day, and people are at each other’s throats already. I mean what the hell was that? Did you see the looks on their faces? They were just about ready to kill each other-“ She blew out a breath and slumped down on a nearby log. “I can’t do this, people are afraid and they keep looking to us for answers, but I’m not good at this Theo. I don’t know how to help them.”

The sun did nothing to counter his drowsiness that morning- nor did his whole night of restless sleeping in which he awoke at every sound. People were understandably angry- they were lost and stranded and wanted to place accusations on someone. He was the pilot.... and thus, he was the target of said blame. And so was Sam. Though she was definitely holding it better than him.
They ate in silence- but it was neither peaceful nor comforting. Theo had to force the food down just because he knew that it needed to be eaten. Soon the perishable foods would go off so that was what they had delegated amongst the survivors. After all their non perishable food went... Well he hoped someone in the camp knew their poisonous fruit from their edible ones.
He had barely chewed down his sandwich when a girl alerted Sam and him of a fight.
Not again.
People were angry. Desperate. But it was one thing to blame and arch against him and an entire other to jump at each other for the kill. More than ever they all needed to work together to find a solution and fighting only exacerbated their problems. But what more could they do to reprimand them? Sooner or later desperation will make everyone act rashly and foolishly.
After Sam and he had separated the two fighters- one who he recognised as Johnny from the fight earlier he caught up to Sam breathing heavily from both the exertion of their efforts and the merciless heat. They really needed to organise a better structure- but people still repelled against his authority because he had been the one to crash the plane.
Theo rubbed at his eyes that were no doubt purple on the underside. "We need to work this out." He agreed. And somehow sort a way to achieve a sense of social cohesion among them. He sat on the log beside her as he eyed her with concern. He doubted he looked any better for wear but he had always felt protective over Sam... and to see her so distraught...
"Neither do I." He said carefully as he stared out to the beach and the plane wreck. A constant reminder of what he had caused. He clenched his fists slightly before relaxing.
"But we don't really have a choice." He said with a force quirk of his lip to lighten his words as he looked at Sam.
He was terrible at pep talks- but at least he was honest.
"We will work through this just like how we face any problem. We will keep it structured as much as we can, like we always do together." Whenever he and Sam were on the same flight crew somehow she always understood him and he her. They worked well as a team- so what was this but another challenge?
A look at the plane again and he knew he was sugarcoating the circumstances.
