I am about halfway through. It's entirely possible that this novel is actually about infidelity (unlike the movie which is about shark attacks) but I have to say the sex scenes are kind of icky. TMI. (I get this is kind of hypocritical since I am a huge fan of the regency romance genre which tends to be somewhat explicit, but Hooper seems like he might be real annoying in bed.)

Exactly. It was like the author kept switching the theme of the novel. I, too, thought the seduction scene in the restaurant was “icky”. She has a rape fantasy, but not with a black man. (A bit racist, there. Don’t forget there were actual rapes by a black man in the town.) And when they were imagining being in an open car with their pants down, and Ellen imagines her “vagina yawning open”, I pretty much was disgusted by the whole thing. Then there was the sex scene in the hotel room, where Ellen describes Hooper in the act. Very unsexy. The author should have cut this entire section out to vastly improve the book.

Since his focus was on the people and not the shark, it's a shame that his writing was poor for those sections compared to when the shark was involved.
But I absolutely agree about Hooper. Not only did Ellen make a stupid decision, but her choice in partners was groanable. :P
