What a disaster!
This is an amazing play.
Not only is it smart, witty, funny and horribly vicious but it's magic is that every few pages, when you just want to die by how insanely twisted and hateful the relationship is, there's suddenly a small moment of warmth and affection. A hint, a movement, a shared laughter... It makes you able to continue. And from a play that looks like it's about the most disastrous marriage, I surfaced out feeling like I read about love. Twisted, harsh, hyper-realistic.

And that's just one couple.

So there are 2 couples. One older - George and Martha - she is the university president's daughter, and he is in the history department. and a young up and coming new couple - Nick (a biology professor) and Honey)

The relationships between the four of them are so dynamic. they keep changing, the power game just flips constantly

and oh the words. and the stage directions. so specific and accurate.
It is a really smart and really good play.
I will read it again for sure, and will keep an eye out for a theatre production. (but will skip the movie)

Nikki | 663 comments I love seeing enthusiastic reviews of books (or in this case, a play) I love! This one has a special place in my heart (along with Wide Sargasso Sea) as I studied it at school as a teenager. Your review captures their relationship perfectly, with genuine caring buried under such destructive & hurtful patterns - thank you for sharing. Don't write the film off too quickly though - Elizabeth Taylor is amazing in it!

That would have been fun to study. so much to look at.
and I will reach Wide Sargasso Sea at some point this year!

I will try the film if you recommend it. I believe you that Taylor is amazing. I'm more worried about Richard Barton managing to do a bogged down history professor - he looks more like a university president. not sure how he can pull this complex role
and the actor playing Nick looks not cocky enough (mind you - I just checked a photo. My thoughts about the movie are not based on any knowledge)
