Welcome to Bookish Yahtzee! The goal of this game is to, as a team, work to complete your board and earn the most points. You get one (1) point for every task completed and (1) point for every 100 pages read. Some tasks only require one book to finish it (like the first six), but others require more. This game will take communication, but should be fun and easy. :D

[Section 1:]

#1-This requires one book.

Read a book: first in its series, with 100-199 pages, that is a debut novel, published in Jan. or Feb., or with "1(one)" in the title

#2-This requires one book.

Read a book: second in its series, with 200-299 pages, with two people on the cover, published in Mar. or Apr, or with "2(two)" in the title

#3-This requires one book.

Read a book: third in its series, with 300-399 pages, with trees on the cover, published in May. or Jun., or with "3(three)" in the title

#4-This requires one book.

Read a book: fourth in its series, with 400-499 pages, with a four-wheeled vehicle on the cover (i.e. a car -- a motorcycle will not work), published in Jul. or Aug., or with "4(four)" in the title

#5-This requires one book.

Read a book: fifth in its series, with 500-599 pages, with a hand on the cover, published in Sept. or Oct., or with "5(five)" in the title

#6-This requires one book.

Read a book: sixth in its series, with 600-699 pages, with a ship on the cover, published in Nov. or Dec., or with "6(six)" in the title

If the total number of points earned from the first section (above) is at least 27, the team will receive a bonus of 5 points!

[Section 2:]

Three of a Kind-This requires three books to be read (doesn't have to be done by the same person).
Read three books that go together in one of these ways: same genre, published same year or in the same month, same author, same number in its series, same number of pages (rounding to the nearest hundred: so 198 would be 200 and 212 would also be 200).

Four of a Kind-This requires four books to be read (doesn't have to be done by the same person).
Read four books that go together in one of these ways: same genre, published same year or in the same month, same author, same number in its series, same number of pages (we're rounding to the nearest hundred: so 198 would be 200 and 212 would also be 200).

Full House-This requires one book.
Read a book that has an author whose first or last name contains either two consonants and three vowels OR three consonants and two vowels (i.e. Karen Witemeyer, Ronie Kendig, etc.)

Small Straight (1,2,3,4 OR 2,3,4,5 OR 3,4,5,6)-This requires four books to be read (doesn't have to be done by the same person).
Read a book with the number 1, 2 or 3 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 2, 3, or 4 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 3, 4, or 5 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 4, 5, or 6 in its page count or publication date

Large Straight (1,2,3,4,5 OR 2,3,4,5,6)-This requires five books to be read (doesn't have to be done by the same person).

Read a book with the number 1 or 2 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 2 or 3 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 3 or 4 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 4 or 5 in its page count or publication date
Read a book with the number 5 or 6 in its page count or publication date

Yahtzee-This requires five books to be read (doesn't have to be done by the same person). Each task must be completed once to get a Yahtzee! :)
Read a book that has an average rating of 4 stars or higher on Goodreads
Read a book that a teammate rated 5 stars (or that a mod rated 5 stars)
Read a book whose title begins with a Y, A, H, T, Z, or E
Read a book with a red cover (when you see the cover, you think "red")
Read a book with a white or black cover (when you see the cover, you think "white" or "black"

Chance-This is a freebie, max one book per teammate :)

Sure, i can explain a bit more in depth.

Let's say a 412 page book was read for task 5. Your team would get 1 point for completing the task and 4 points for the page point. So 5 points total.

The game is divided (like real yahtzee) into two sections and the first section has a bonus point opportunity. If the team gets at least 27 points in the first section, they get a 5 point bonus. I will add all the tasks points (6) and page points together once that section is completed and if the total is 27 or higher, the bonus will be given.

For tasks that need more than one book (in section 2), the team only gets the task point once all books are done for that task.

Hope this made it a little clearer. :)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I’m in and read four books per month (slow for me but not sure I can do more right now).

May I be on a team with Hannah?
(If she signs up.)

For section one: does every team member do all those books or is it just one book per task per team for that section? Just want to make sure I’m reading and understanding it correctly.

Game sounds really fun! You’re so creative!

message 25: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Quick question with regards to Section 1:

Read a book: first in its series, with 100-199 pages, that is a debut novel, published in Jan. or Feb., or with "1(one)" in the title

For the above, do I understand it correctly:

First requirement - the book should be first in series and 100-199 pages long.

The second requirement may be any of:
Debut
Published in Jan/Feb
One in title?

Sorry that i have that listed confusingly. It only needs to fit one of those requirements. So a debut novel would work, or a book 100-199 pages, or first in its series, etc.

Maria, perhaps your teammates (once teams are decided) would be able to look up page counts and publication dates as they are needed. I know I wouldn’t mind helping out in that way if we end up on the same team. I’m so glad you’re joining in!

Thanks, Melanie! I think I'm starting to get it. ;)

So, for section one, each team completes each task once (by any member). For section two, team members work together to complete each task. For the chance task, each member gets to use one book?

A couple other questions (sorry, I'm the queen of questions :P).

Are we playing to a certain date or until every team finishes every task?
Also, are we allowed to switch books around after we've claimed them for a certain category? Or is it like real Yahtzee where you're stuck with your original choice? ;)

message 37: by Lanelle (last edited Aug 03, 2019 01:36PM) (new)

Lanelle I have a question concerning the publication tasks: Do you want the original publication year and month of the book, or the publication year and month of the version we read?

Also, for the "Read a book whose title begins with a Y, A, H, T, Z, or E" task, are you excluding 'a', 'an', and 'the', or can the title begin with one of those articles?

Exactly! :)

We play until October 20th and the team with the most points wins. If a team finishes the whole Yahtzee board they can start it over again to continue getting points until the challenge ends (Oct. 20th).
It is like the real Yahtzee and once you place a book somewhere that is where it stays. :)

For publication date, it can be any edition that is listed on Goodreads. Just link to the edition you found that works. :) I don't want to be super strict on that. :)

Articles are fine to use or skip. So you could use The Yellow Packard for either T or Y.

Any genre is fine. :) The book just has to meet the challenge guidelines:

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 1527 comments I’m also curious about the plus sign!

Quick question: will reading a longer book give us extra points in section two, or only section one? (Looks like it might in the top, but then you said something later about “only getting one point once all the books for a task are completed”).

message 47: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments On the straights, do we pick which straight we're working on and use those numbers for the tasks, or do we just choose whichever of the three numbers in the task options? (Does that make sense?)

No, because i have your name and then hannah with a plus below you. Staci and Sarita want to be together, if possible, so that is why there is a plus with them. :)
