It’s time to start thinking about fun ideas for the Fall Challenge.

The bonus theme is Characters: Damsels.

As in past challenges some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of fall or autumn. Others may reflect the bonus theme. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of those themes, they’re just fun or unique ideas to stimulate your reading.

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don’t worry about repeating what someone else has might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5, 10 and 15 point tasks. This thread will be open for ideas until August 15. Fall tasks will begin to be posted on August 17. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments - read a book that is the continuation of a series that you FIRST read as a group read (required state season that the series book was read)

damsel by definition is a young unmarried woman - read a book with the main character is female and younger than 20

damsel is distress is a common theme in literature, games etc - read a book that is shelved as adventure or classic - most feature an adventure/action

damsel" derives from the French demoiselle - read a book that was originally written in another language to your primary language

the first English use of "damsel in distress" was in Richard Ames' 1692 poem "Sylvia’s Complaint of Her Sexes Unhappiness - read a book where a word in the title matches one of the words (of at least 4 letters in the poem) - https://quod.lib.umich.edu/e/eebo/A69...

a Damsel is a brightly colored fish - read a book that has at least 4 colors that are not black/white/grey on its cover

Emily Whitmore | 166 comments Take back Damsel - read a book whose main character is a female.

I think we may have used this one before, but:
Celebrate fall by reading a book with an orange, yellow, brown, or red cover.

Fall/Autumn can symbolize the beginning of end of the growing season or death. Read a book about grief.

Fall, although related to the end of the things, is also harvest time. Read a book set in a rural area anywhere in the world.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 1557 comments If you look up Damsel a part of the definition includes the synonyms: Colleen; Mademoiselle; Signorina; señorita; Fräulein-read a book written by a female author who is Scottish, French, Spanish or Portuguese or German.

Read a book by an author whose initials can be found in "Damsel In Distress"

message 7: by Donna (new)

Donna | 1271 comments Favorite Damsels:

Princess Leia: Help me Obe-wan kenobi

Dorothy: there no place like home

Princess Buttercup: Farm boy! Fetch me that pitcher

Scarlet O'Hara (at times)

Lizzie Bennett

Aibileen Clark: you is kind you is smart you is important

Disney has a slew of damsels.

Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser

Jane Eyre

Eliza Doolittle

The one thing I hate about damsels, is that they always fall down at the most inopportune times... so maybe a title word that has to do with injury

Joanne (joabroda1) | 1557 comments Thinking back in time (and showing my age-LOL). I thought about the cartoon with Dick Dasterly, The Canadian Mountie(what was his name???) and the Damsel who kept getting herself tied to the train tracks (hoping there are a few here old enough to recall this).

Read a book by an author who has 2 D's in his name

Read a book set in Canada

Read a book that shows a train OR Train tracks on cover

Laura Fazekas | 171 comments Readerboard name: Absurda

I love books and, like many book lovers, I accumulate books much faster than I can read them so I have a huge TBR (To Be Read) pile. Let’s all work on those books we’ve been meaning to read but haven’t yet read. Read 1 book from Option 1 or Option 2. Required: State which option you’ve chosen.

Option 1: Read a book from your personal TBR pile or that you have marked as “Want to Read” in Goodreads. For the purposes of this challenge, a TBR pile book must be one you’ve owned for at least a year but haven’t yet read.

Option 2: Read a book from one of the lists below. Required: state the list and page number where your book was found.

Popular Top Of My Tbr List Books
I Should Probably Read This Sometime...
Everyone's Read It But Me

Fall means back to school, now is a great time to honor an essential resource for school work: The Library. Read 1 book from Option 1 or Option 2. Required: State which option you’ve chosen.

Option 1: Support your local library by checking out and reading one of their books. Required: State the library where you checked out the book.

Option 2a: Read a book with a library prominently featured either as a location or subject.

Option 2b: Read a book with a library on the cover. Required: include the cover in your post.

To celebrate the resilience of Native people throughout the US, read a book from this list of Native American Authors. https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...#

message 21: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 2466 comments To counter all the damsels we'll be reading this season, a book with Feminism as an mpg

Because it's Fall to some and Autumn to others, read a book that has had different titles (e.g. a book that has republished when the movie came out with a different title, or that has had different names in different countries)
Or a book with a word in the title that is spelled differently in American vs British English. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America... )

message 22: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments In honor of the recently deceased Nobel laureate, read a book whose author initials appear in TONI MORRISON.

Wacky colors and Halloween go hand in hand. Celebrate by reading a book whose cover, according to TinEye, is at least:
A. 25% green and 25% purple OR
B. 25% orange and 25% black.

Read a book from one of these lists:
Ghost Stories
Best Books to Read for Halloween!
Haunted Houses

Celebrate fall with me by reading a book that has a leaf on the cover.

Celebrate Thanksgiving with me by reading a book with a food item on the cover.

Celebrate back-to-school with me by reading a book set at least 50% at a school (preschool through grad school).

message 25: by Kelly (last edited Aug 13, 2019 10:37AM) (new)

Kelly L (kelly29) | 282 comments 1.) Read two books with titles that form a "Before & After" phrase, a la Wheel of Fortune. Tenses, singular and plural, etc. must match perfectly, and each title must contain three or more words. Subtitles can be omitted for this task.

For example, the last word of "The Handmaid's Tale" is the same as the first word in "Tale of Two Cities," forming the phrase "The Handmaid's Tale of Two Cities" This works as a Before & After. "Tales of the City" would not work because "Tales" is plural.

2.) Read a book that extends over two or more clearly defined timelines.

3.) Fall brings the premiere of new television shows. Read a book that inspired a television show, and indicate what the name of the show was. Shows can have premiered in any year, including fall 2019, but must have aired at least one episode by the end of the Challenge.

message 28: by Paula (new)

Paula S (paula_s) | 642 comments A damsel in distress is always incapacitated in some way, so maybe:

a book featuring someone in a coma or with someone sleeping on the cover
or a book where someone has been kidnapped and need to be rescued
or a book where one (adult) person is carrying another (adult) person on the cover

message 29: by Paula (new)

Paula S (paula_s) | 642 comments More damsel ideas:

* read a book with GIRL in in title

* read a book in translation where either the version you read or the original title has the word girl, but not both, e.g. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo original title: Män som hatar kvinnor (Word for word translation: men who hate women), or The Girl on the Train, Swedish language edition: Kvinnan på tåget (Word for word translation: the woman on the train). Won't work: Flickan med gåvorna(word for word translation: the girl with the gifts) The Girl With All the Gifts - both titles include the word girl. Word for word translation must be provided by poster.
