OSS Conference?

That is an interesting idea! I do like the idea of exploring and discussing options to bring the community together outside of these multiple threads and somehow have the group meetings documented so those who can’t attend can be a part of it.
I recognise that a conference is a huge endeavour and interestingly I believe I read ages ago when this group first began a thread of a few people discussing hosting a worldwide event/conference...some challenges aside from the actual organising of it (who, what, where, when, how and funding) is the time zones. So it may be a somewhat unrealistic endeavour with the personpower in the OSS volunteer team - but who knows :)
Maybe to scale this down to something manageable - another idea:
I’ve seen other book groups do Facebook live interview videos with the authors or have a moderator chair the podcast and answer the readers’ sent in Qs but have it live so people can either see it in real time or later. Obviously some issues may arise with moderating the comments of FB live videos in real time but my view is we can’t have a perfect no drawbacks situation all the time :) or the moderators can use a different video interaction platform if they wish.
I see people around the world are having book clubs meet up discussions which seems great to localise the meets and get to know each other.
I found it useful when the moderators or members posed specific discussion topics for the Fierce Femmes book.
Finally - potentially could have a date when the online book discussion (podcast or whatever method) will be aired bimonthly (obviously ok to discuss the book earlier with the spoiler alerts) so a bigger majority of this huge book group can “gather” online to discuss/listen to the book discussion (maybe between 2-3 moderators or guests every two months?)
Look forward to further suggestions around this :)

By OSS do you mean "members" or "moderators"?
If you mean members, that could be possible, there is a Skype debate sometime organized by a few members.
If you mean moderators planning it, to include authors that would be extremely hard. Let's think about it, managing interview with the authors (sending questions and getting the answers, or when we get lucky a discussion) is a huge task already so a live.... It would be so time consuming for them. Let alone the organization, we have people all around the world so I'm wondering about time issues ;)
The idea is interesting but quite difficult to set up in my opinion. I believe it's something that has been asked already. To me the best option remains small meet-up :)
Also, I lean towards the idea that members could do things without moderators managing it, many people have good ideas and, in my opinion, they should try them on their own with other members. By this I mean to not all OSS activity in OSS Team's hands otherwise people wait and nothing is done. :)

For the next few years at least let's keep with
- submitting questions every 2 months to authors
- Meet Ups scheduled with or without Mods ( still bummed I don't live in London and can hang out with Meelie and Jo!)
- the OSS Skype channel created by Agnes and Robert
Any other ideas that can lead to a thriving community?

Well, if people want to create threads I'll contribute but I don't want to spend energy and then see nothing happening, I believe I have tried enough. Like you I'd like the forum more active and I'm willing to be there but I don't want to be alone and to feel I'm alone because that's tiring.
Yes Yes, that could be awesome ! I would love that, to meet members of The Shared Shelf like you meet people in a comicon, with conferences, streamed in Fb live, or Instagram TV for the Interviews or conferences!
I've heard about creating topics, mods can do that for collecting questions from non attending members, hun, what do you think about that ? 🤷♀️
There are some places around here in Cincinnati 🙄🙄 like Newport on the levee !

I just thought of a cool idea. What if OSS had an annual conference (that could be live-streamed for those unable to attend), where members could gather with authors, moderators and Emma? That would be terrific and a great way to strengthen the community by bringing it off the web into a new dimension of actually meeting and engaging in person.
It would be awesome if this could come up for discussion if many members of OSS show interest!
Have a lovely day!
