Justin Hyman (whoisthismuaddib) | 8 comments So, OK....This one is a stretch. I remember a boy who travels through a magic gate or portal and enter a world where he learns that he has certain powers. The ability to emanate heat and the power to "throw shadows" are all I really remember. I recall that the portal was guarded by creature with bones and limbs at seemingly impossible angles.
Any help would be awesome!!!!

Thanks!

Justin

Kerry (libraryleo) | 13 comments Justin,

The Pendragon series by D. J. MacHale sounds very similar. I don't remember those particular powers coming from the boy, but in each of the books he meets up with another person who has different powers, and the gates are guarded by critters of the scary sort. The Merchant of DeathD.J. MacHale

Jessica | 2 comments This sounds similar to the Seventh Tower series by Garth Nix. The boy lives in a world where they have shadows that move on their own and they have a device called a sunstone that released heat as well as light to create different things. There is also another world that they travel to where they recruit creatures to become their shadows and there were some strange creatures but I dont particularly remember one with odd bones but it has been a while.

Justin, are you still looking for this book?

Rob | 83 comments That's The Infinity Concerto by Greg Bear.

He learns to throw shadows and control his body heat while being trained by three old witches. There's a skinny character with weird limbs protecting the portal into the other world.

Lot's of stuff about music, the sidhe, creating new universes. 'Serpent Mage' is the sequel.

Technically we need to hear from Justin to mark this solved and shelve it.
