Hello everyone!!

Hope you are all enjoying summer, wherever you may be!

This month's BOTM is Pride by Ibi Zoboi, a retelling of Pride & Prejudice!!

This is definetly out of my comfort zone and I am embarrassed to admit that I have never actually read the original (though I have tried many times!!)

The author's twist on the story seems really interesting and I am looking forward to reading it with all of you!!

I’m almost half-way through and I am really enjoying it much more than I thought I would!!

Anybody else?

Kelsey (kelso30) | 82 comments I'm trying. I have started it, but haven't made it far yet. Pride and Prejudice was the same way for me, I did read it, and watched the movie, but I never loved it. I'm hoping this one will surprise me!

I feel your pain, I really struggled with the original, but I'm actually finding this version much easier to read.

It might be because I've got the Audiobook version?

I also usually don't like poetry, but I don't mind the lthe little poems which are sprinkled throughout the book

Kelsey (kelso30) | 82 comments I do really wish I had gotten the audiobook, I think it would have gone much faster. But once I got sucked in I really sped through. I did end up really liking the story, which seriously surprised me. I'm not a poetry fan either, so the poems themselves didn't do a whole lot for me, but I do appreciate extra touches like that when it comes to understanding the character and making them more believable to me, so that was nice.

I've just finished this over the weekend and I am really glad I got the Audiobook, as I think I would have felt the same way you did Kelsey! The reader was brilliant, as was her gorgeous accent.

I've never read Pride and Prejudice, but I did have a vague idea of the storyline. I was a bit hesitant, as this would not be something I would pick out myself, but once Zuri introduced her close family, I was in.

Having grown up in a low income family, I could relate with the struggles Zuri was facing and the Prejudice that she had towards rich people.

For some reason, as Zuri did, you just assume they are stuck up and mean, without ever even considering that their family made sacrifices and worked hard to get to where they are. But then again, (view spoiler)

I'm at work now, so I will continue later!

Most of all, I enjoyed the characters and Zuri's family. I live how protective she was of her sisters, her family, and her neighborhood.

I am also glad that we got to see her (view spoiler) I knew she would have gotten there in time, but it was still nice to see.

All in all, I am glad I read it and it definetly kept me coming back for more at times, but I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more if I would have read it in my teens.

I have to agree with you as I grew up low income as well and that bit was very relatable, I always struggled because my cousin was so much better off financially and her complaints seemed so trivial to me.
I also fully agree with you about probably enjoying it more when I was younger. lol.
The family and descriptions of the neighborhoods was fun, I've always lived in a relatively small town, so city life is way out of my element.
