Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Reading a massive tome is not easy but can be quite intimidating!

Here's a simple schedule that should help us conquer this tome. The chapter numbers have been taken using Maude's version of the book. However, am sure most translations have the same chapter demarcations. In case of any doubt, just remember that each week has a maximum of 60-70 pages as its limit.

This is merely the reading schedule and no book discussions will happen here. Will create a separate thread for each week, so that we can discuss it at length and without anyone fearing any spoilers.

Any doubts or queries or suggestions you have with regard to the reading schedule, please discuss it in this thread itself.

Reading Schedule

Em Lost In Books (emlostinbooks) Thats for others, I know your vow of reading this by so December 31st.:P

don't drag it to next year.:)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Okay buddy.. now no more spamming in this thread. Let's continue this in our BR thread okay? :)

message 7: by Jarvis (new) - added it

Jarvis Nice schedule Sri! Thanks :):)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Thanks Deej. :)

Will put up the first thread for discussions soon.. Not immediately though :) Maybe by tomorrow as we should have read something to discuss by then :)

message 9: by Jarvis (new) - added it

Jarvis Okay :)

Em*Greedy* (Iniya) (iniya_n) Saw that sri... Brilliant attempt::-) lets try our best:-)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Thanks Ini :) Thought that by doing this we can actually get our cart moving :P :P

Now waiting for you and Harry to join in as well :)

This shall make it 5 of us reading it in total

Gehna/Deej
Smitha
Harry
Ini
Sri

And others too if they find the schedule suitable. Also this way anyone reading it at a later date can always post their comments without fearing too much in terms of spoilers.

Hajarath Prasad Abburu (hajarath) | 9245 comments I will have to catch up to you I guess :P Where do you guys stand Btw? Mumma great idea :)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Harry - all of us are beginning with a fresh slate once again. At least I am. So don't worry and take it at your pace.

If more people are likely to join this discussion and would prefer a later date (starting next week or so), we can do that. However, they should be committed to reading it :)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) I would like to join the book discussion. May I? I haven't read this monster yet.

message 15: by Ahtims (new) - added it

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments I feel anyone may join in...
But let us wait for the official decree :D

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Rachel - Most definitely :) More the merrier :)

Would love to discuss this monster with you :)

@Smitha - I have created the thread for discussing the first week portion

Its here... https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Smitha - Hahahahahaha.... official decree in a book reading/loving group?? :O :O :P :P

@Rachel and Smitha - I created this reading schedule with the selfish notion of luring as many people as I could to read this monster :P :P

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) Good, thank you. It will be interesting. If anything, at least an accomplishment for reading it. :)

message 19: by Ahtims (new) - added it

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments @Srividya, thank you.. :D

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Rachel - I know what you mean. I feel the same way :)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Calling all readers --

Re. the schedule - I guess I wasn't thinking straight when I was creating it. I have put the start dates for reading and not for discussion. Should I change the dates by a week at every step to mark the beginning of a discussion, which would give us the previous week to read the book.. Or should I leave it like this and we discuss as we read the part.

Or am I being too confusing and not making sense... Do let me know.

message 22: by Ahtims (new) - added it

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments I usually discuss while I read (due to an extremely short memory)
But anyway is fine with me.. :)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) I have the same problem, which is why I kept the start date of reading and discussing the same. However, I felt that it could overlap and cause confusion to some. hence the question.

Okay then will leave it as it is.

Will also add a speed reading thread later, if someone is racing ahead in the book and wants to jot down points of discussion immediately without waiting for others to reach that place. What do you think?

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) The way I view it from other paced reading groups I belong to is,

"Week 1 19/9/14 – Book I Chap. I-XXI
Week 2 26/9/14 – Book 1 Chap. XXII- Book 2 Chap. IX"

Week 1 is we can either read the Book I. Chap. I-XXI before the 19th or during the time until the 26th. Discussion about Book I Chap I-XXI is open but not to discuss the book beyond those parts.

During Week 2 Discussion is open about book I chap. XXII- book 2 chap. IX and the previous discussion but not beyond book 2 Chap. IX. and so on.

Is this correct?

message 25: by Versha (new) - added it

Versha Thanks Gehna it look interesting. Sri great work!!!

message 26: by Srividya (last edited Sep 20, 2014 10:09PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Yes Rachel - that's correct. Although there are some people who might join us later and for them, they can always visit the older threads and comment. If any of us wants to discuss it further, we can do so.

@Varsh - Thanks :) Want to join us? You can safely say that you have conquered two Tolstoys in a single year :P :P

message 27: by Versha (new) - added it

Versha @Sri I am in!!! This looks a bit easy read as per your Reading Schedule :)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Varsh - saw your comment in the other thread, so have already added you to the list :)

And yeah thought this would make it less intimidating and more focused.

message 29: by Versha (new) - added it

Versha Sri, Which translation are you reading?

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @Varsh - Am reading Maude's translation.

Shilpa | 1061 comments Guess I'll use this schedule some time in the future! :(

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) @ All Readers -

I am really sorry but I won't be able to read this book currently. Too many things happening at my end with Shrija's health and work, which is making it impossible for me to read and post as per the schedule. I will try but am not sure if I can do justice to it.

For all those planning to read, I will still be creating the threads for discussions. I hope you all will go ahead and read this tome and tame it.

Good luck people and happy reading :)

message 34: by Ahtims (new) - added it

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments It's fine, Srividya. Hope everything goes smoothly for you. Don't bother about war and peace. One of us can take over creating threads if you are not able to. Thank you for paving the way to reading Tolstoy.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Thanks Smitha :)

And as of now, I can handle creating the threads etc as I will be here for some time at least, its just that I won't be able to read this book with you as I am not in a position to concentrate and read huge tomes right now!!

Will let you all know when I can't.

message 36: by Ahtims (new) - added it

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments Sure :-)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) One more thing - Do you think you will need a speed reading thread? In case one of you surges ahead before I create the thread? Or is it unnecessary at this point in time? Do let me know :)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) Eh, right now the book is slow and not inspiring me to read. I think I will take a day or two off from reading it and focus on my other books.

Sorry to hear life going here and there. It does happen and I understand. Hope you can take some time to enjoy yourself.

message 39: by Ahtims (new) - added it

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 2936 comments I don't think I will be needing that :P

message 40: by Jarvis (new) - added it

Jarvis @Sri... What happened to Shrija? :O

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) Okay - So do we start every week on a Friday and end it on a Thursday?

Week 1 - 15th - 21st July
Week 2 - 22nd - 28th July
-
- And so on?

Or do we need more time per part? Or do we decide as we go on?

I don't want the last as it will mean that we NEVER finish it! :P

More time is okay as all are working and may not get time. If so, how many days per part? 10? 15?

We can also work in some breaks between two parts - say a day or two..this again I don't think will work but that's my personal opinion.
