To all of the authors who are still promoting their books in the reader threads: Today alone I've had to be the mean old moderator and ask people four times NOT to use these discussion threads for self promotion, one right after another in one thread. It is totally not fair to me to have to be the bad guy, and our members have made it very clear that they do not want this, so I'm asking you to please respect our policy here. I get that you want publicity for your work, and I respect that. If you can think of a feature that might better help you that we haven't already provided for you, send me a message.

If I ask you to please move your post promoting your own book to an appropriate thread, and you haven't done so in 24 hours, I'll be deleting it. Sorry but that's just how it is.

Jason Chapman | 33 comments I think the danger of self promotion on sites like Goodreads is that all you end up doing is posting to other authors instead of actual readers of books.

Actually, I know for a fact that the "actual readers of books" look at the advertisements section (one person called it a great place to shop), and they look at the "tell us about your books" section.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) They're incorrigible!

Skye | 2105 comments Yes, and it is truly annoying when I try to catch up on recs, comments, news ( while I'm working) only to discover someone is self-promoting and wants me to purchase; in my case, I only buy paper books; some are 18 dollars a shot.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) I applaud you. Way to stick to your guns. The printed page--indeed, is the only way to show respect and love for the habit of reading.

message 7: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments Thanks, Feliks; I spend far too many hours online working and reading ( for work) why oh why would I want more electro magnetic fields bothering my eyes and brain.????

message 8: by Feliks (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Bravo! Yep. Makes me sick to ponder how many hours a day I have to gaze into a flatscreen monitor. Can't avoid it at work, of course. But at home, its my last resort only when nothing else will do. What I should look for is some kind of laptop or word processor which doesn't even have any internet on it, so I can only do my creative projects on it and no surfing.

At least I can say that I don't watch TV at all anymore. Cable's been cut.

message 9: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments sorry about your cable; I have cable but mostly watch the main stations. I literally sleep through television shows.

You mean like this? ;)
(There's another similar machine I've seen lots of writers praise, but can't think of the name right now...)

Miss M | 560 comments Got it - behold, the Alphasmart.

message 12: by Feliks (new)

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) I like that AlphaSmart. Thanks! Screen needs to be just a tad bigger though; and it needs to be an actual screen with DPI rather than LCD. I'd buy one.

p.s. I cut off my cable tv myself!
