Bentley has suggested that books which people have mentioned in the discussions should really be placed in this thread. Here are some that I recommended -
These two cover the period we are looking at which are pretty readable and not too long -
by Lily Ross Taylor (no photo)
by
Mary Beard
The following two, which are fairly dense and long, are the gold standard for the late Republic -
by Erich S. Gruen (no photo)
by
Ronald Syme
This is the source for much of what we know about these times -
by
Plutarch
Here are two about Mithridates -
by
Adrienne Mayor
by
Alfred Duggan
Douglass suggested these -
by Mary T Boatwright (no photo)
by Greg Woolf (no photo)
Christopher Scarre (no photo)
by
John Perkins
Kressel compared today's "fame junkies" with those of ancient Rome -
by
Jake Halpern
And finally, to mix fiction with non-fiction -
by
Colleen McCullough
by
Robert Graves
by
Robert Silverberg
So keep those book recommendations coming.

Thanks for the book suggestion, Dave. I also liked this one - Cicero is such a great character, as is his secretary Tiro.

Roman fiction
I initially got interested in ancient Rome by reading two excellent mystery series, one by John Maddox Roberts and the other by Steven Saylor. Both series cover this period and the mysteries are built around actual events and people. And the "detectives" are great characters.
SPQR series

John Maddox Roberts
Roma Sub Rosa series
by
Steven Saylor
Then of course there's Colleen McCullough's wonderful Masters of Rome series, which covers events from the beginning of Gaius Marius' career through Octavian taking over. I especially appreciated her appendices, which cover things like Roman naming conventions and all the legal minutiae of the system of government. We discussed all of these books and the discussions can be found in the Roman Empire folder here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

I can heartily recommend all of these books, they are my favorites.
