Library Queen | 320 comments Hi Lanelle! My name is Jada, and I live in the Midwest. This is my first team challenge, so I'm excited. I like to read just about everything except horror. When I'm not reading, I watch a lot of movies and I like to play board games.

Library Queen | 320 comments I have some ideas, but wanted to hear from everyone else, you know? I didn't want to get to into planning before knowing what everyone else was thinking.

I'm fine with someone being captain.

Sounds good. Hopefully everyone else will check in soon.

message 13: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie Hi guys, sorry, I couldn't access the chat over my phone, so I had to wait to get to my computer.
I'm Davina, 27 and I live in Austria. I just graduated from university and am now looking for a job as a German and History teacher. I like to read and draw a lot. :)
I would like someone to coordinate too, but I fear with looking for a job, it would be too much responsibility for me at the moment.

message 14: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle Hi, Davina. It's nice to 'meet' you. Congratulations on graduating. Here in the United States there are always jobs for teachers. I wish you luck on your job hunting.

Yes, to get those bonus points, we definitely want to read books with at least 400 pages for each task in Section 1.

Do you think we as a team should focus on Section 1 first? Then after we finish it, go on to Section 2?

message 16: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments I've got a book for task 3 that should get us, I think 7 points. It covers 3 tasks and is 384 pages, which since we're rounding up is 4 points for pages.

message 17: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments Would you like to coordinate Lanelle? Since you've done this before.

Jada, I think the rounding up is only for Three of a Kind and Four of a Kind.
For Section 1, a 384 page book would be 1 point for the task and 3 points for the page count. But if you want to read it, go ahead. I'll find a 600+ page book to make up the difference.

message 20: by Vinnie (last edited Aug 19, 2019 02:07PM) (new)

Vinnie Oh I'm sorry, I deleted my former message, before I saw your comment, because I counted it again and we would also get 21 points for the page count if we read 100 pages for #1, 200 for #2, 300 for 3#... but more points can not hurt ;)

Yes, I think it makes sense if we concentrate on Section 1 first.

I could do #1 of Section 1 with "A Spool of Blue Thread" by Anne Tyler with 358 pages since it was published in February. I think that would be roundedup to 4 page points, right?

message 21: by Vinnie (last edited Aug 19, 2019 02:09PM) (new)

Vinnie Nice to meet you too, Jada :)

message 22: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments I just went and asked to be sure. :) It'd be good to know. and it's 3 points for the task, I think, since it covers 3 tasks.

message 23: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie I'm sorry - I don't quite understand - but how can a book cover 3 tasks? Shouldn't we read 1 book per task (in Section 1)?

message 24: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments The book I had covered 3 options for task 3, and I thought that meant it got 3 points. I could be reading that completely wrong though.

message 25: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments I've never done this before, sorry. SO I could be confused.

message 26: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie oh ok now I'v got it! Thank you for explaining.

message 27: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments Yeah, no prob. I might be wrong though, so I've asked Melanie. :)

Lanelle Library wrote: "I've never done this before, sorry. SO I could be confused."

There's always a learning curve for new challenges. I think it's 1 point per task, plus points depending on pages of the book for Section 1.

message 29: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle Library wrote: "Would you like to coordinate Lanelle? Since you've done this before."

Davina, is it okay with you if I coordinate for the Team? I don't mind doing it and I have the time.

message 30: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie Of course, that would be great Lanelle!

message 31: by Lanelle (last edited Aug 20, 2019 11:13AM) (new)

Lanelle Davina, will you take #1? Jada, can you take #3? If those are okay with you guys, I'll take #2.

Hopefully Kimberly and Keri will check in soon.

message 32: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments I can also do #4 if I need to, but yeah, I can do 3.

Do you want me to put you down for #s 3 and 4?

message 34: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments Sure. And since Melanie answered, it means 5 points for task 3 and the book I have for 4 would be 6 points.

message 35: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle Library wrote: "Sure. And since Melanie answered, it means 5 points for task 3 and the book I have for 4 would be 6 points."

Thank you for taking #s 3 and 4.

Just when I think I understand the rules, someone asks a question and the answer is completely different from what I thought :) We'll figure it out together.

message 36: by Library (new)

Library Queen | 320 comments Sure no problem! Hopefully everyone else will check in tomorrow.

message 37: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie Is it alright for me to do #1? I would get 5 points there.

Yes. Thank you. Be thinking about which task you'd like to do after that

message 39: by Keri E. (new)

Keri E. (kewaites) | 56 comments Hi everyone!!! For some reason, I didn't get a notification about this thread until late last night! I have set up email notifications now though.

My name is Keri! I live in Jackson, MS. I am 27 years old and work as a paralegal; however, I plan to become a forensic accountant. I enjoy reading a lot. I have been an avid reader since I had a teacher in second grade, who stressed the importance of reading.

I actually just attended a book festival this weekend and I bought books that would cover either the three or four of a kind and full house in the second part! I have three/four books that are YA (same genre) and published the same year (2019). I say either the three or four because I am not sure if one of my books will count as it hasn't been released in the states yet. But it has been released in the UK.

For the full house, do the vowels and consonants need to be different? If not, I have a book called Haunting Paris by Mamta Chaudhry, which would work. There's three consonants and two vowels in her first name. It's also her debut novel!

I'll keep thinking about some ideas for the first part too! I'm super excited for this challenge. I haven't done one in a couple years.

message 40: by Lanelle (last edited Aug 20, 2019 06:59AM) (new)

Lanelle Hey, Keri. Welcome! I've never been to a book festival. It sounds wonderful.

Would you like to get started on 3 or 4 of a Kind, or maybe Full House, while the rest of us finish Section 1? Or do you have a book that will work for Task 5 or 6?

I'm pretty sure the book by Mamta will work for Full House.

message 41: by Keri E. (new)

Keri E. (kewaites) | 56 comments It definitely was. I love meeting authors and listening to their panels.

I can go ahead and get started with the 3/4 of a kind and full house! I'm sure I have some books that could work for 5 or 6, but I can't think of any off the top of my head!

message 42: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle Keri E. wrote: "I can go ahead and get started with the 3/4 of a kind and full house! I'm sure I have some books that could work for 5 or ..."

Great! Let me know which you decide to work on so I can put your name next to the task in Message 5. And if you need or want help, just say something. YA is a good theme for those Tasks. I have plenty YA books.

message 43: by Keri E. (new)

Keri E. (kewaites) | 56 comments I'll start on the four of a kind! I'll check and make sure the one that hasn't been released in the states would count (if not, I have PLENTY of YA books. I will let you know if I need help! Thanks!) I'll also check if the vowels/consonants need to be different or if it's okay if they're the same for the full house.

The books I plan to read for the four of a kind:
1. House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
2. I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver
3. Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus
4. What She Found in the Woods by Josephine Angelini

For the full house: Haunting Paris by Mamta Chaudhry.

Yay Kim! You've got a few years on me. It will be our 37th year anniversary this coming December. My son and his family used to live in Dayton (stationed at Wright-Patterson). Ohio is a beautiful state, but your winters are too cold for this desert girl.

Can you help us with Section 1? We need someone to take Tasks 5 or 6. Or you can start on something in Section 2. Message 5 has a list of the Tasks and who is doing what.

message 47: by Lanelle (new)

When I was growing up, I made fun of snowbirds. Now I would do it in a heartbeat. These Arizona summers are loooong.
