Justin I read the first in his Gabriel Allen series. kept me turning pages but I was disappointed with the lack of action. has anyone else read his books? does the action pick up in the next ones?

No. His books are slow paced. Small body counts. Very few explosions. He managed to make a "stop world war" plot surprisingly mundane.

The Allon series isn't about action. Silva is one of the small number of espionage writers who's known for "getting it right" -- his depiction of intelligence operations is more accurate (=quieter, lower body count, far fewer explosions) than the action thrillers. He's more on the John Le Carre end of the spectrum.
