Jerdan_girl | 2 comments I read this in high school (2005-2009) at the school library. I do not know the time period setting but it is not a modern setting. I am pretty sure the setting would be within Laura Ingalls Wilder lifespan. I believe the main character (girl) was born a twin or close in age with her sister. Her sister was born sickly so all the family attention went to her. As they grew up the main character became a bit of a tom-boy but her sister was beautiful and had a talent of singing. Her sister was greatly admired by the family and the community. The main character always worked hard in school and had a quiet boy as a best friend.

I believe they lived on the east coast or an island off the east coast. The main character goes to work; I think her job was in fisheries, crabs or oysters. Her sister is sent off to a musical school in the city paid for by the family and a neighboring elderly couple. The Main character best friend also moves to the city for a job or training/education.

One detail I remember is the main character would always rub lotion/cream on her hands at night, trying to keep her hands soft and womanly because the work made them rough. She is hoping when her best friend comes home he will propose and they will be married. However, when he does come home it turns out is already engaged to her sister.

In the end, after the wedding her mother tells her she can be happy too. She leaves and goes into the medical field. She moves out west and marries a widower with children. The last scene is her saving a new born twin in childbirth and nursing it.

I have been trying to find this book for years. I thought the title was Learning to Love _____ or Loving _____. I'm finally reaching out cause I really want to reread this book.
