A couple of things to keep in mind:

✸ Communication is key. Please make sure to check in regularly with your team.

✸ Let your team know if it looks like you won't get your review posted by Thursday, 11:59pm. You do have all of Friday to submit your review, but it can be intensely frustrating for your captain if they don't know when or if they can expect your review before the deadline.

✸ If you know beforehand that you won't be able to read and review a book during a certain week, you can request a pre-arranged absence from me, either by posting the request in the discussion thread or by sending me a pm. The request has to be submitted before the team rolls for the week in question, can only be approved by me as the mod in charge of running the game, and has to state a reason for the absence. (Reasons for pre-arranged absences can include e.g. going on vacation or work trips, planned hospital stays, exam period, etc.)

✸ If you do not have a pre-arranged absence and won't be able to finish your book in time for an unforeseen reason, please let your team know as soon as possible. If the team has earned the free pass, it can be used to cover the missing review. Without a free pass, the team has to sit out the next roll.

✸ We all know that real life gets in the way sometimes, be it through family emergencies, work emergencies, natural disasters, technical problems making it impossible to get online, or in other ways. That being said, please do keep in mind that this is a team challenge and your team relies on you to do your part unless an emergency occurs.

✸ If you find that the pressure of keeping up with the pace of the game gets too much for you or you wish to stop playing for any other reason, you can drop out of the challenge at any time. In that case, please let your team captain and/or me know that you wish to drop out rather than just disappearing without a word so your team won't be penalized when you fail to turn in your review. Thank you!

Captain's Handbook

✸ The team's captain is its chief organizer. This includes rolling the dice, posting the team's new spot to the team thread and the Post Your Spot thread, collecting links to team members' review posts in a single post to be linked in the Post Your Spot thread, doublechecking that books and review posts comply with requirements, reminding team members to post their reviews in time if necessary, etc.

✸ The captain may delegate some tasks, such as rolling and posting the new spot to the team thread, to another team member if they so choose. (Either a designated roller who fulfills this role every week, or whichever team member is online first once rolling is possible.) Collecting reviews into a single post and posting to the Post Your Spot thread should always be handled by the captain.

✸ Instead of having everything handled by a single team captain, teams can also choose two co-captains to handle the workload.

✸ Selection posts are not strictly required by the game's rules and I won't be checking for them. It's up to the team captain to decide whether they want them.

✸ If the team captain requests a pre-arranged absence, it's their responsibility to arrange for another team member to step in as temporary captain.

✸ The team captain is my primary point of contact for the team and should allow receiving private messages.

Anyone wanna be captain?

Beth (jasonverlander) | 157 comments ROUND 11: SUPER SERIES CHALLENGE

✸ This is a team challenge that requires 1 book a week . The object of the game is to roll the dice and move along the board. To win a team must roll past 100. Teams will roll on Fridays.

✸ R11 Super Series Sign Ups are open 08/17 through 08/26. Then teams will be formed and the game will officially start on 08/30.

✸ Team are formed at random.

✸ Teams will roll the dice by clicking here on Fridays once their team has completed their reads. Please note you will be using two dice for each roll.

Holiday Scheduling:
✸Thanksgiving: Teams will roll the Friday before (11/22). No roll on 11/29. Reviews are due and the next roll will be on 12/06, at which point the game resumes its normal schedule.

**VERY IMPORTANT**
A team CANNOT advance if all the reviews are not complete and in by the deadline. That being said, players should have their reviews in on Thursday. Your team captain cannot roll until ALL of the team reviews have been posted.

❖If a player fails to have their book done two times throughout the game (excluding a prearranged absence) they will no longer be a part of the team.

HOW TO PICK A BOOK:
✸ Books are based on the spot you're on, not the roll of the die.
If you land on single digit spot, for example let's say you land on spot 5, then you have to read a book that's #5 in a series. For double digit numbers, for example you land on spot 48, you can read either a #4 or a #8 in a series.
✸ Standalone books can be used for a 1 or a 0
✸ First in a series can be used for a 1
✸ I don't expect anyone to read a series out of order and for people that don't read series books that still want to play there will be an alternate option. There will be an alternate option for each spot.
✸Half books: ½ or .5 count only if they meet the page requirement AND will be judged by preceding whole number numeral on Goodreads.
Example: Spot 8: A MacKenzie Clan Gathering (MacKenzies & McBrides, #8.5) would count for spot 8 because it meets the page limit.
✸ Books in multiple series can be used for ANY of the series. An example: Azagoth (1001 Dark Nights, #6; Lords of Deliverance, #5.5; Demonica, #10.5) can be used for spot 6 for 1001 Dark Nights, spot 5 for LoD or spot 10 for Demonica because it meets the page limit.

✸ There will be a separate thread for captains to post their place on the board after rolling and a link to the team's completed reviews.

FREE PASS
✸ Teams will have a chance to earn 1 Free Pass to roll. To earn your free pass your team has to complete their reads a day before the next roll. Once your team has done this you will have 1 free pass. The free pass will allow a team to roll if they are missing a review(s) before the cutoff. Once you've used it, you can't earn another one. It's a one-time shot. NOTE:
✸ The free pass may not be used for the win.
✸ If the player whose review the free pass is covering for has already previously missed a deadline, they must submit the missing review within one day after the deadline if they wish to retain their place on the team.

BONUS POINTS:

✸ One point can be earned for reading three or more books in a series.
✸ One point can be earned for reading a book with >500 pages.
✸ One point can be earned for starting and finishing a series. There must be at least 4 books in that series. Series + spin-off totalling ≥4 books also counts. For series with >9 books, point will be awarded for reading books 1-9. For still ongoing series, all books published to date (OR up to #9 in longer series) must be read.~ No re-reads on this one.
✸ 2 in 1: One point can be earned for reading a book that fits both the series number and the alternate for the spot you are on.
✸ One point can be earned for never picking a book from the alternate lists. This point is awarded when your team rolls past 90.
✸ Halloween Bonus: One point can be earned for reading a Horror/Paranormal/Urban Fantasy book for the roll on 10/25.
NOTE:
Each point can only be earned once per team.
✸ The series-specific bonus points (3 or more books/ starting and finishing a series) must be two different series.
✸ Single book bonuses (>500 pages/ Halloween/ 2 in 1) may overlap with a series bonus.

How to use bonus points:
✸ Bonus points can be added to your roll to move you further along the board. Each bonus point can only be earned once and spent once.
✸ Bonus points may be used for the win. Example: Your team rolls and lands on spot 97. Your team has earned 4 bonus points. You can use your bonus points to move to spot 101 and compete for the win.
✸ You don't have to use all your bonus points at the same time.
✸ You can also use your bonus points earlier in the game. Example: Your team has earned 3 bonus points. Your team rolls and lands on spot 88. A team member doesn't have a book that is either #8 in a series or fits the alternate. They do however have a #9. Your team may decide to use 1 bonus point to move to spot 89 and have 2 bonus points remaining for later use.

✸ Re-reads are allowed ( ~EXCEPT on Winning Spots, no re-reads to win)
✸ Page limit is 140
✸ When using an anthology you may use any of the numbers in the book except for the .5 since this means ½. But you must review each story in the anthology. The same applies to short story collections.
✸ Series # will be based on how GR has it listed.
✸ Deadline cutoffs are based on US Central time zone

✸✸✸ Any questions please feel free to ask!

any ideas on names? I came up with a few names all based on 7, since we are team 7 and there are 7 of us.

The Seven Reading Dwarves
7 Deadly Books (or Readers)
7 Reading Sins (it might be kind of fun to come up with a list)

message 26: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 157 comments In message 10 I have copy & pasting game rules/guidelines. I will create a spreadsheet to keep track of series that everyone reads as we get bonus points for someone reading 3+ books in a series & starting and finishing a series in the duration of the game.

When posting your reviews please post what series it is in so it’s easier for me to keep track.

I’m also a very annoying captain and will send a PM if there isn’t a review posted by Friday morning to make sure it will be done as I can’t roll again until all reviews are in!

We can roll starting at 0:01am Central Time (provided all reviews from the previous roll are in, except for the first roll this week of course). I should always be available to roll at that time if it's an inconvenient time for you. What time zone are you in?

I work Monday-Friday 11AM-7:30PM and I normally get home by 8 so they should be up by before 9 to give myself time to get settled.

Good to know! I'll be asleep at that time (I'm in GMT+2, 8 hours ahead of Central Time), so in that case just roll as soon as your review's up (unless we're still waiting for someone else of course). :)

message 40: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 157 comments Strategy:

Obviously the point is to be the first team to get to 101 (or over 100) and there are some ways to make that easier

1: Pick your book as early as possible (Friday or Saturday)
2: Have a couple books in mind ahead of time (If we are on 20, there is a good chance we will still be in the 20s so see if you have another #2 book laying around)
3: Get as many bonus points early as we can (we can't get one of them until we get to 90) The list of bonus points are in message 10
4: Communication is important in any group challenge, but especially weekly ones. Check in as often as you can. Feel free to message me if you are having an issues (not getting your books read/need to drop out/need an absence for a week etc)
5: Look over the alternatives and see which ones fit books that you could theoretically read! (If we land on 10 with the alternate of romance, I know I have a #1 in a romance series and that will already cover a bonus task)
6: Most important, just have fun. Don't read out of series order (unless that's your thing) for this challenge. Don't force yourself to read a book you don't want to read just for this challenge.

Let's have fun!

*sits back and nods sagely* I see we're in good hands! :)

Also, feel free to ask for recommendations if you're running out of series to read! Between the seven of us, we can probably come up with a few suggestions for most genres.

Regarding people needing an absence: remember to ask before we roll for the week you'll be absent - and since that needs mod approval, you might as well just ask me. ;) Seeing as how I'll be hanging around this thread all the time anyway. *lol*

message 42: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 157 comments Also remember you can do standalone books if we land on something with a 0! But definitely ask for recommendations.

If y'all want to list genres you like to read now, we can even post some now so we don't have to scrounge for it later!

message 44: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 995 comments I try to rely on library and KU books as much as possible, so I’m going to start requesting holds for those 5s and up now.

message 45: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 995 comments Beth and team, just a heads up that I’m in Central Florida and Hurricane Dorian is coming knocking on Monday/Tuesday. It’s pretty likely I will lose power, but for how long who knows.

I’m hoping that my office will have power so that I can still have a place to charge my phone during the day. I also super hope that I can still have cell access at home but it’s a new neighborhood so I don’t know what to expect. During Irma I could Facebook Live lol.

But in the interest of being overly cautious I just wanted to put it out there that things could get tricky later in the week but I’m going to try to finish before Tuesday. :)
