Inventions That Changed the World - Part 2
Duration: September 1 - November 30, 2019

Tasks:
1. Electricity:

Electricity has become the basic need for day to day life. It's been there around all along but the practical applications to effectively use it was invented. Although many use electricity, how many of you know the evolution of electricity?
Alessandro Volta discovered the first practical method of generating electricity. 1831 is marked the year of major breakthrough for electricity. A British scientist Michael Faraday discovered the basic principles of electricity generation.
🔧 Read a book with a character named Alessandro or Michael (reasonable variations accepted) OR with a 1, 3 or 8 in the page count.

2. Battery:
The usage of "battery" to describe a group of electrical devices dates to Benjamin Franklin, who in 1748 described multiple Leyden jars by analogy to a battery of cannon (Benjamin Franklin borrowed the term "battery" from the military, which refers to weapons functioning together).
🔧 Read a book whose title begins with B or ends with Y OR where two or more characters need to "function together" to make something work (your interpretation).

3. Printing Press:
A printing press is a mechanical device for applying pressure to an inked surface resting upon a print medium (such as paper or cloth), thereby transferring the ink. The printing press spread within several decades to over two hundred cities in a dozen European countries.
🔧 Read a book with a character that is a printer or uses a printing press OR set in Europe.

4. Morse Code and the Telegraph:
Morse code can be transmitted and received with very simple electrical equipment, such as the electrical telegraph invented in 1816. The telegraph changed society by giving Americans the ability to communicate long distances.
🔧 Read a book where someone communicates a long distance OR with a 16 or 18 in publication year.

5. Steel:
The invention of the Bessemer Process (a technique for creating steel using molten pig iron) paved the way for mass production of steel, making it one of the biggest industries on the planet. Now steel is used in the creation of everything from bridges to skyscrapers.
🔧 Read a book whose author's last name begins with S or ends with L OR with a bridge or skyscraper on the cover (show cover).

6. Transistors:
The first practically implemented device was a point-contact transistor invented in 1947 by American physicists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley. Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for their achievement. Transistors revolutionized the field of electronics, and paved the way for smaller and cheaper radios, calculators, and computers, cell phones and televisions, among other things.
🔧 Read a book where a character uses a radio, calculator, computer, TV or cell phone OR that has won a prize (Tell us what kind of prize).

7. Antibiotics:
An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria and is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections. Throughout the 20th century, antibiotics spread rapidly and proved to be a major living improvement, fighting nearly every known form of infection and protecting peoples' health.
🔧 Read a book where a character is given antibiotics OR with a title that is 11 letters long (may be many words).

8. Contraceptives:
Birth control has been used since ancient times, but effective and safe methods of birth control only became available in the 20th century.
🔧 Read a book with a character who uses contraceptives OR where the first letter of each title word can be found in CONTRACEPTIVES (three word minimum).

9. X-ray:
On November 8, 1895, German physics professor Wilhelm Röntgen stumbled on X-rays while experimenting with Lenard tubes and Crookes tubes and began studying them. He referred to the radiation as "X", to indicate that it was an unknown type of radiation. Since Röntgen's discovery that X-rays can identify bone structures, X-rays have been used for medical imaging.
🔧 Read a book where there is something unknown or something discovered in the story OR where a character gets an x-ray or an x-ray is taken of an object.

10. Refrigerator:
The refrigerator allows the modern family to keep food fresh for longer than before. Refrigeration in transit makes it possible to enjoy food from distant places.
🔧 Read a book with a refrigerator on the cover OR with the word refrigerator in the text. (Give us a partial sentence and page/loc#.)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 616 comments I have a question about the task: Read a book ... that has won a prize (Tell us what kind of prize).

Would a nominee count as well?
I read several books for this task and noticed each time afterwards it was a nominee and not a winner *sigh* and the real winner of an award despite my high expectations I don't like :-(

She Can Run by Melinda Leigh 4* 9/18 ITW Thriller Award Nominee for Best First Novel (2012)
Erinnerung des Herzens=Genuine Lies by Nora Roberts 5* 9/22 RITA Award by Romance Writers of America Nominee for Single Title Contemporary Romance (1992)

Back to the Bedroom by Janet Evanovich 5* 10/12 RITA Award by Romance Writers of America Nominee for Short Contemporary Romance (1990)

I'll accept a nominee. Too bad you aren't doing the Award Challenge Part One, She Can Run would have counted for that one!

No idea how I missed Award Challenge - Part One. Luckily there are another five books in this series (four of them were recently on sale and I grabbed them) so I can use those.
I checked the lists and there are some books and authors I'd like to read, and will check out some of those I don't know yet if any of my libraries has them :-)

BTW: the second link (2018 Theakston's Goodreads List) is either broken or the list doesn't exist anymore.

In all my missed-a-challenge-distress I forgot the reason I started the replay. So here it comes now: Thank you! :-)

This was one of the system generated lists (as is for most of the awards, and some setting - those stuff that have a link on a book main page) and if GR decides they don't aknowledge this award and delete make a system run to delete all the data the list behind goes as well :-(
