I'm in

45/50

Origins Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution by Neil deGrasse Tyson (9/4/19)

UFO (Scotland) - If we bear these facts in mind when we analyze reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), we can immediately recognize an enormous potential for error. (p 434)

Blank Canvas (Irons and Works #2) by E.M. Lindsey (9/6/19)

Ceremony - Without much ceremony he shoved his hand into the slit of Niko's boxers and pulled his cock out. (loc 1924)
Forest - The drive to the Forest Lake springs was just over an hour, and Sage didn't argue when Niko insisted they take his car and that he drive. (loc 2131)
Glow - He didn't bother with the lights, the glow from the porch lamp enough to illuminate his way, and he didn't look back at Niko as he stripped out of his shirt, then moved his legs off the chair with a heavy thud and pushed himself onto the bed. (loc 1875)
Honey - "I know, honey." (loc 96)
Hot Springs (must be together) - I wouldn't really be opposed to you just dropping me off at like the hot springs and hitching my way back. (loc 2116)
Sunset - "I ran into them at the park and that girl was ready to ride one of those bouncy horses into the sunset. (loc 1214)

Hand in Glove (Roderick Alleyn, #22) by Ngaio Marsh (9/10/19)

Cardboard - The sun was shining and the smell of country lane mingled with the disinfectant, cardboard and paste atmosphere of the station. (p 17)
Extreme - "She is not," he said in the trembling voice of extreme exasperation, "my niece." (p 79)
Film - Miss Cartell's rather prominent blue eyes, slightly bloodshot, seemed to film over. (p 170)
Remarkable - "She's a remarkable person." (p 32)
Sheep - On these occasions Fox always reminded Alleyn of a dependable sheep-dog. (p 281)
Tallest (No variations) - One, the tallest, carried a piece of rag and he wiped his hands on it continually, as if he had been doing so, unconsciously, for some time. (p 121)

Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson (9/12/19)

Adventure - As the organizing principle for the chemical behavior of all known and yet-to-be-discovered elements in the universe, the table instead ought to be a cultural icon, a testimony to the enterprise of science as an international human adventure conducted in laboratories, particle accelerators, and on the frontier of the cosmos itself. (p 96)
Eruption + Scenery - Xou can see plenty of natural scenery, though, including hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, ice floes in the North Atlantic, and volcanic eruptions wherever they occur. (p 151)
Harbor or Harbour - This universality of physical laws tells us that if we land on another planet with a thriving alien civilization, they will be running on the same laws that whe have discovered and tested here on Earth - even if the aliens harbor different social and political beliefs. (p 30)
Ocean - Perhaps the most exotic happenings between (and among) the galaxies in the vacuum of space and time is the seething ocean of virtual particles - undetectable matter and antimatter in pairs, popping in and out of existence. (p 60)
Plains (no variations) - One of them, a very large array of radio dishes near Socorro, New Mexico, is officially called the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, with twenty-seven eighty-two-foot dishes positioned on tracks crossing twenty-two miles of desert plains. (p 133)
Underwater - Two years later the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States signed the Limited Test Ban Treaty, which prohibited nuclear testing underwater, in the atmosphere, and in space - where nuclear fallout could spread and contaminate places outside your own country's perimeter. (p 135)

Unbreakable Bond (Jamie Bond, #1) by Gemma Halliday (9/16/19)

Grove - Eight-forty-six I showed up and sat on a bench hidden behind a grove of trees. (p 84)

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (9/18/19)

Crater - "Our boat goes out to the Molokini Crater." (p 125)
Daredevil - Daredevil, adventure hound, ambitious, cutthroat... (p 63)
Gorge - "Isn't it gorge ?" (p 135)
Helicopter - "Zip-lining . . . helicopter . . . hike . . . submarine . . . kayaking . . . off-roading . . . bike ride . . . " (p 151)
Jewelry - "All I've added to it are a couple of T-Shirts and a few small pieces of souvenir jewelry." (p 253)
National Park (must be together) - What's amazing is that even at four thirty in the morning there is traffic headed up through the national park to the crater's peak; there are vans with bicycles, hiking groups, and couples like us - we're a sort of couple - planning to lay down a towel and huddle together in the morning chill. (p 247)

Hold Me Close (Last Frontier Lodge, #7) by J.H. Croix (9/20/19)

Glacier - The spectacular beauty of the area was on vivid display with views of the mountains, Kachemak Bay and glaciers every which way she turned.

Icons of England by Bill Bryson (10/6/19)

Botanical - Brooke worked for years on the The Wild Orchids of Britain (finally published in 1952), but he only began to achieve recognition after the war, when he merged his botanical interests with lyrical, semi-fictional memories of childhood. (p 70)
Indigenous - From that early meeting I made my decision to farm Ruby Reds, a beautiful and delicious breed indigenous to the West Country. (p 183)
Maritime - There is something gallant about these little sandy harbours, assisted by few natural features: they have crept seawards, not with the arrogance of the great industrial shipyards but with persistent local determination to defy disaster, raise the money, catch fish, take trade, and give insignificant out-of-the-way towns a maritime back door and an identity with the world. (p 369)
Shire - 'A reeling road, a rolling road, that rambles round the shire' (p 320)
Waterfall - Perhaps they ware great collapsed caverns their ice-melt streams shrunken now to little misfits or completely gone, leaving, for example, the high, dry waterfall at Malham Cove. (p 153)

Trouble in Nuala (The Inspector de Silva Mysteries #1) by Harriet Steel (10/10/19)

Afternoon Tea (must be together) (Scotland) - The author of the book wrote that it was the perfect additon to afternoon tea. (p 106)

How To Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems by Randall Munroe (11/5/19)

Thermal - These thermal updrafts are relatively weak; to lift your larger human body, you'll need to find a stronger source of rising air. (p 21)

Europe A Natural History by Tim Flannery (11/16/19)

Alpine - With its distinctive human landscapes, once-great forests, Mediterranean coasts and Alpine vistas - we all know Europe when we see it. (p 16)

Denise | 2870 comments I'm trying to be strict and only read books I have at home, so I can donate them and not have to pack them when I move (next year?) but this looks like i need a good geology read! Any good geology fiction out there? I know whatshisname - Michener? uses a lot of geology in his books but they are too long for me right now and I don't have any. Suggestions? or is everyone closing ranks? thats ok too

I have some romance books set in Alaska, I think I'm going to read one on those... could get me some of those words!

or, totally sneaky, something set in New Zealand itself. I have one unread New Zealand book from Tracey Alvarez on my TBR....

Jan | 20729 comments I have two New Zealand books lined up for September. One of them takes place in Rotorua so I'm hoping the geology words are there.

Molten Mud Murder (Alexa Glock Mysteries Book 1) by Sara E. Johnson

Maybe you can find something that takes place in Yellowstone NP. That would work well too.

Denise | 2870 comments I've never read anything by C.J. Box but one of his series is in the Yellowstone region so I might try that. Maybe find a book set in New Zealand - still looking for a good literary fiction or mystery for this.

Just to be sure ... just the word "Yellowstone" (referring to the park, but without the "NP" added) would NOT work?

I'm done. Missed two words, but found two of my Scotland carry-overs (still not found my missing Russia word, though)

Boutique(s) - It looked like the kind of box you would receive in a high-end boutique. (loc 866)

How To Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems by Randall Munroe (11/5/19)
