Agnese | 55 comments In order to select our first group read, we would like to invite you all to nominate ONE book from the list of 100 Best Books by Women Writers in Translation and second ONE nomination by another person.

On 30 August we'll create a final poll and you'll be able to vote for ONE book that you would like to see as our September selection.

You can find the full list of 100 Best WIT in the group's bookshelf section or here: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

I'd like to nominate Subtly Worded by Teffi AKA Тэффи According to the NYRB (who published her complete nonfiction in one book, which I'd like to have) "Like Chekhov, she fuses wit, tragedy, and a remarkable capacity for observation; there are few human weaknesses she did not relate to with compassion and understanding."

Sanne (sanneennas) | 28 comments I'd like to nominate Translation as Transhumance by Mireille Gansel (trl. Ros Schwartz) - because well... a translated book on translation? count me in!

Do I understand correctly that I can also second another nomination? In that case I second Subtly Worded by Teffi - I have been meaning to read Teffi for ages!

Yes, that’s correct - each member can nominate 1 book and second 1 nomination. :)

Michael (knowledgelost) | 31 comments I won’t nominate because ew have great choices already but will second Go, Went, Gone

message 8: by Nell (new)

Nell (sackvillepanza) | 10 comments I'd like to third the nomination for Teffi's Subtly Worded and nominate Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi.

Checking my list and I've read a grand total of zero female Russian authors, unless one were to count former Russian territories (Svetlana Alexievich and Dubravka Ugrešić, looking at you).

A particular slight since I've had several fine choices on my radar for several years, including Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Tatyana Tolstaya, and, of course, Teffi!

Mary D (wanderroxyreads) | 4 comments I would like to nominate Subtly Worded by Teffi and second the nomination for Go Went, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck.

'Subtly Worded' has actually already been nominated, Mary. I don't mind if you switch your second to it.
