Some men will stop at nothing to get what they want. What the Veck brothers wanted was for their long-held secret to remain undiscovered. Ginny Ford accidentally found out the secret, and unable to live with her conscience any more, she set out to inform the authorities about what was happening at the Arlborough Boys' Home. However, for some reason help for the children was not forthcoming, and to her horror Ginny found out that by contacting the Police she had managed to put her entire family at risk.

G.J. Griffiths (gjgriffiths) | 9 comments I would like to submit:
So What's Next! by G J Griffiths. A "feel good" story with dramatic twists and turns!

BLURB: Molly Pearson is a young Biology teacher with two passions in her life: a strong commitment to protecting wildlife; and a desire to encourage the children in her classes to feel the same enthusiasm for Nature. When her class decide they would like to restore the school’s neglected and vandalised nature corner her hopes are raised and challenged at the same time. The hurdles that she meets along the way will include bullied and bullying pupils, as well as the expected ones of finance and willing manpower.
But leaping those fences does not prepare the ambitious Molly for a dramatic fire and the confusion of a new passion in her life, in the form of Oliver Shrimpton. Will he become that significant someone, or is he just another obstacle for her to overcome?
G J Griffiths' latest novel, in the So What! series of stories, is still based firmly around the events that take place within the "walls" of Birch Green High School. It follows some of the trials and tribulations of Molly Pearson, a previous novice teacher who was mentored by Robert Jeffrey - the main character from the first book. Molly's efforts to spread the important message, about protecting wildlife and the natural environment, reflect something that has always been important to the author. For that reason some of the proceeds from the sales of this book will be donated to wildlife charities. Although this book is an exciting novel telling the story of schoolchildren who want to protect garden wildlife, it also contains several chapters towards the end with plenty of helpful information for lovers of nature, and who want to take a fresh look at making their garden a wildlife garden.

Lori Schafer (lorilschafer) | 23 comments On Hearing of My Mother's Death Six Years After It Happened by Lori Schafer On Hearing of My Mother's Death Six Years After It Happened: A Daughter's Memoir of Mental Illness by Lori Schafer. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

She backed blindly out of the driveway and took off, far faster than usual. But not in the direction of my school. Towards the border, the state line.

“I could take you away,” she’d told me once, smugly, after the first time I’d made a break for it and had to be hauled forcibly home. “Take you to the airport and fly you anywhere I want to; somewhere no one will ever find you. And I am your mother and there is absolutely nothing that anyone could do to stop me.” She’d smiled complacently, humming cheerfully under her breath. Pleased with her cleverness, the infallibility of her plan, her power…

***

It was the spring of 1989. I was sixteen years old, a junior in high school and an honors student. I had what every teenager wants: a stable family, a nice home in the suburbs, a great group of friends, big plans for my future, and no reason to believe that any of that would ever change.

Then came my mother's psychosis.

I experienced first-hand the terror of watching someone I loved transform into a monster, the terror of discovering that I was to be her primary victim. For years I’ve lived with the sadness of knowing that she, too, was a helpless victim – a victim of a terrible disease that consumed and destroyed the strong and caring woman I had once called Mom.

My mother's illness took everything. My family, my home, my friends, my future. A year and a half later I would be living alone on the street on the other side of the country, wondering whether I could even survive on my own.

But I did. That was how my mother - my real mother - raised me. To survive.

She, too, was a survivor. It wasn't until last year that I learned that she had died - in 2007. No one will ever know her side of the story now. But perhaps, at last, it’s time for me to tell mine.

Through a Glass
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Irene, a gifted young artist, always paints with a mirror strategically positioned behind her, as an aid with perspective. As she puts the finishing touches to her latest painting, and studies its reflection in the mirror. She is shocked to see an extremely tall man, half hidden by the trees staring back at her.
Irene had not placed a figure in the painting. So who was he? Where did he come from?
When she examines the canvas, there is no one there!
Puzzled and a little apprehensive, Irene turns, and refocuses on the mirror. To her astonishment, the glass appears strangely liquid. She tentatively puts her hand out to touch it, and in a split second finds herself transported into the world of her own painting.
In this strange and frightening place, Irene meets the mysterious tall man, and embarks on a journey that will test every ounce of courage and faith she possesses.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Professor Blayde Wolfe brings a whole new meaning to psychological manipulation. Handsome, with mesmerizing silvery-gray eyes and a sexy English accent, Wolfe captivates his female students, luring them in while they are completely unaware that he only wishes to satiate his immediate hunger.

Myca Blanchette is Wolfe’s most promising graduate student and the only one seemingly able to resist his charms no matter how hard he tries. Could that be because she understands the human psyche as much as he does, or is there something more?

Jack Forrester is Wolfe’s new TA. Shy, with grunge-like style, Jack doesn’t fit in at the upscale university, and reaches out to his mentor for guidance. Under Wolfe’s tutelage, a brand new Jack Forrester emerges. The only problem is, with Jack’s confidence increasing daily, so does his cunning.

In this subjective spin on the classic fairy tale, a triangle of friendship, lust, and love is tested. Powers of seduction and manipulation abound in this first book of the two-part series and will leave you guessing who exactly is predator and who is prey.

Gita Reddy | 5 comments Catherine Dickens: Outside the Magic Circle is part fiction and part fact; less fiction and more fact.

Catherine Dickens Outside the Magic Circle by Heera Datta

Charles Dickens married Catherine Hogarth on 2nd April, 1836, when he was an upcoming writer and reporter. Soon after marriage, he tasted spectacular success with The Pickwick Papers and in ten years, was the foremost writer of his time.

Catherine was the mother of his ten children, his hostess, she accompanied him on his American tour.

Yet, twenty-one years after they wed, Charles Dickens very publicly separated from her, denouncing her as an unfit mother and wife. He removed her from his home, his life, and the lives of his children. He never saw her again, not even when their son, Walter, died at the age of twenty-three in faraway India.

His allegations about his wife and his unhappy marriage were works of fiction, as successful and enduring as the rest of his works. The real cause of the separation was an eighteen-year-old actress, Ellen Ternan, who later became his mistress.

On her deathbed, Catherine gave her daughter letters Charles had written to her and said, “Give these to the British Museum, that the world may know he loved me once."

Outside the Magic Circle is a fictionalized account of Catherine’s life after she was plucked out of her familiar world and thrown to the wolves, as it were, by the exemplary Charles Dickens. It is told in her voice; sometimes reminiscing, at other times baffled, confused, hurt, angry. It has her tears, her love, and her quest for the meaning of her life, and marriage.
Excerpt:
That hour was a blessed relief. I was free of the constraint of being discarded wife and mother. I was someone faceless in whom nobody had a vestige of vulgar curiosity.

The woman asked, “Forgive me, my dear, have you suffered a bereavement?”

I nodded.

“Your husband.”

When I again nodded, she said, “You poor dear, you are not bearing up well, I fear. You should try to find comfort in your children. Do you have children?”

When I did not answer, she said, “Ah, that makes it difficult.”

I did not correct her about me being the mother of nine living children. At that moment, the children I had carried in sickness and brought forth in pain and hardship seemed like phantom children. They had been born but had drifted away like wraiths.

Only little Dora seemed real. Beautiful, delightful Dora, whom the merciful Lord had taken away when she was only eight months old. I said, “My marriage was not barren. I had a daughter but she died an infant.”

Mrs. Evans dabbed at her eyes and recalled her two infants she had buried.

That night I realized a sorry truth. From now on I would have nothing to say to women except about the death of a child. The usual conversation of husband and children and household matters was forever closed to me.

*Heera Datta is my pseudonym. I used it because this book belongs to a different genre from my other books.

How I Killed Off My Ex-Wife and Other Far-Flung Misadventures by John Wood

In the tradition of George Plimpton’s Out of My League and P.J. O’Rourke’s Holidays in Hell, participatory journalist Wood takes the reader around the world to document a lifetime of foolish decisions, embarrassing behavior, horrifying predicaments, and really, really bad luck.

From disrobing for Playgirl to rescuing a hostage at James Bond Fantasy Camp. From getting the dung scared out of him on a Tanzanian safari to being detained as a spy in Havana. From stressing out on “The Dating Game” to snuffing his ex in Vietnam.

How I Killed Off My Ex-Wife is a collection of true stories that may cause the reader to wonder: No way this many dumb, outrageous, impossible things could have happened. Not to one person. Not in one lifetime. Not without extraordinarily poor judgment, unusually bad karma, or being dared lots and lots of times.

Most readers have had crazy experiences in their life. What separates them from Wood is that most people have good reputations to protect, possess reasonable judgment, and have the good sense not to publish their stories and confirm what ninnies they really are.

REVIEW: FRONTIERS by JEFF W. HORTON. (CYBERSP@CE SERIES #2)

“FRONTIERS is an exciting science fiction adventure about man's quest to reach the stars, and the reasons behind it: greed for new weapons technology vs. the impetus to acquire advanced knowledge. Henry is literally a "boy genius," seeded with intellectual and intuitive capacity by one who.intervenes "from elsewhere." Once into adulthood, he will be the chosen pilot of "Frontier," the space ship whose design had been gleaned from reverse-engineered alien technology. Hank’s flight will catalyze a literal new era for humanity.”

Humanity lacks a common interest to unite it, instead allowing everything else to divide it. When world governments learn that the Earth is nearly out of fossil fuels, it turns out to be the match that will set the world on fire.

Enter Hank Reynolds and humanity’s first interstellar ship named Frontier, which promises humanity the opportunity to explore the cosmos, and an unlimited supply of energy. The only problem is someone wants the program stopped, and Hank Reynolds dead…

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

The house next door had always been a little creepy. But when her father began to tell stories of his own childhood, Melody Jackson knew this wasn't going to be an average summer vacation.

This is the story about a smart girl who hates new-fangled technologies, and is more interested in machinery and objects of the past. Melody also believes little in the ways of spiritual, metaphysical, or the unprovable. She's home schooled, a little nerdy but a stern realist.

It isn't long, however, before Melody stumbles into some very old truths of the world and the universe.

Dark, horrible things.

It was the house next door, which was really the start of it. The house had always been a little creepy, but when her father began to open up with stories of his own childhood, Melody Jackson knew this wasn't going to be an average summer vacation.

Join Melody, her parents, and her friend Flutter (who becomes fixated with the creepy neighbor next door) as they travel through a whirlwind of adventure, suspense and terror. Starting at the local, haunted amusement park and ending with a terrifying night drive to nearly bottomless lake in the dark, Melody's view of the world would never quite be the same again.

Charles Vrooman (greenpower) | 73 comments The True Virus Thriller Novel by Charles Vrooman The True Virus: Thriller Novel
This story takes place during the last Gaza/Israeli war. Characters from both sides are introduced through subplots allowing the reader to see why conflicts have always existed between these two countries.
The novel starts out with a hacking incident involving the main CIA computer. After this breach in security, John Brookfield a CIA computer specialist, travels to Israel to work with Sarah Stein the Co-developer of DNA computer technology to find out if the DNA component of the CIA system has been compromised. While in Israel, John is able to supply spy equipment to his fellow CIA agents, which they use to discover a tunnel in Gaza used for smuggling Iranian rockets from Egypt. John is shocked when the cell phone of one of these CIA agents is hit by a bullet and explodes in his hand. Soon after an epidemic breaks out and the agent dies.
John is able to obtain blood samples collected from his fellow CIA agent which he carries in a biohazard briefcase. However, he is captured by Hamas terrorists who video tape his interrogation trying to prove that the CIA was responsible for the epidemic. Not only is this video tapping released over the internet, but a second one showing John preparing to be beheaded is shown. However, Mossad and the CIA free John.
Working with blood samples, scientists in Israel and the World Health Organization discover that the the epidemic is a result of the Ebola virus being used as a germ warfare agent. With Sarah’s help, John discovers that a Hamas bioterrorist is the hacker who programmed the CIA’s system to produce the real live virus that caused the epidemic.
Not only does John go after this Hamas bioterrorist, but Hamas tries to kill John. They first use a suicide bomber. When that fails they use a dart laced with the Ebola virus. This is when the story takes a dramatic turn and John is infected with Ebola. Sarah, who has fallen in love with John knows that she and her father must come up with an antidote to save John’s life.
As you can see, this biotech thriller is not only timely, but uses all the elements that makes this action filled novel worth reading.

P.B. Cannon | 6 comments Can you nominate a novella? If so, I'd like to present one of mine, the third in a series of this family (approximately 33,000 words):

A Blankie for Baby by Bea Cannon

It's a werewolf story with a difference. All Cady and Sam want to do is live a normal, quiet life while raising their daughter in the small town of Matthews, NC. However, circumstances sometimes arise that disrupt this goal. Even when trying to do something as simple as making a gift for a friend.

Cady learns that very special friends are going to have a baby, so she decides to present them with a baby blanket for their upcoming bundle of joy. Of course, since the parents are special, the baby will be, also, so it will not be an ordinary blanket.

Unfortunately, their quest for quietness will once again be disrupted.

An excerpt:

Something smacked me in the top of the head and though I was seeing stars, I pushed off and twisted around to see a ghoul drawing back his ham fist to have another try at busting my head open. He must not have been too experienced at this. Everybody knew you couldn’t bash a werewolf’s head open that way. Skull’s too hard.

I whipped around and extended my claws and the ghoul looked at me in shock. That claw-extension thing of mine takes ‘em by surprise, sometimes. The dumb-shit goon yelled, with indignation: “You ain’t no damned cat! How th’ hell…!”

He didn’t get any further with that thought as my not-supposed-to-be-able-to-be-extended claws took his head off just then, as I leaped high and swiped hard. Then I opened his chest up and pulled his heart out and tossed it into the trees. The ghoul immediately began that shriveling thing they do when killed. Stupid-ass. Who the hell stops to get outraged during a fight to the death?

A.M. Dunnewin (amdunnewin) I'd like to recommend my book The Benighted. :)

The Benighted (The Benighted Saga, #1) by A.M. Dunnewin

The King was dead.

His body was found slain in his room, only months after his son had been brutally murdered. Skylar Mandolyn, his daughter, has now become the last heir to the throne. But instead of becoming Queen, she was imprisoned for helping in the escape of Sir Harlin Brien, her knight who was framed for the King’s murder.

Confined to darkness, Skylar's captors have given her no choice but to yield to a new kind of enemy: a domain that has advanced in both technology and warfare. It's only when she refuses that the prison uses other means of persuasion. Though unmerciful, the whip lashings and isolation can't suppress her memories. She's forced to face again both her brother's death and her father's emotional decline, though even the darkness can't hide the deceptive hands that have tormented them all. Advisor turned adversary, Cross Lutherus has brought the ancient bloodline to its knees, and Skylar is the only Mandolyn left to feel his wrath.

With two kingdoms on the brink of war, and the end of her life drawing near, Skylar's only hope is in the person who haunts her the most – Harlin, the knight who was sworn to protect her. His presence surrounds her when the darkness screams louder than the prisoners, when Death smiles a faceless grin in between the cracks of the stone. And it's his strength she embraces just as the tremors start to rise from the deep, crawling up through the prison's walls to terrorize the benighted realm and all its souls.

The mystery was never how Harlin escaped. It is how he will return.

Evolution

Once long ago before our time,
There lived mermaids descended from slime,
One known as violet was born from the darkness,
To put a discovery to the test,
The discovery was of the land beyond,
Beyond the water that would break her bond,
Surrounded by green trees that made their mark,
Large clumsy creatures tarred through the bark,
One with wings flew into the sky,
As violet gazed up high and wondered why,
Why her kind hadn’t dominated this land,
And crawled off shore through the sand,
As she swam for pearls for the queen,
She wondered and imagined if it was a dream,
Deciding it was time to leave the ocean,
Violet put her story into motion,
She swam to the shore to get a close view,
Already missing her home the only one she knew,
She glided up onto the sand,
And slowly crawled onto the land,
Her breath grew short as she turned to leave,
But then the air filled her up and she began to breathe,
Rays from the sun burnt scale after scale,
And formed a skin beneath her tail,
She crawled for days with her tail in a flap,
Until it hit a sharp rock and began to snap,
Her tail split forming two pieces,
As she stood and walked her fin formed creases,
The creases transformed into two flat bases,
Two feet that allowed walking in many places,
A water born creature producing mankind,
Of her former existence none can find,
This is a theory of how we began,
On the day the mermaid set to her plan,
Now in spirit she is a goddess,
And will forever be remembered as none the less.

Every poem tells a story.

Fresh scratches in old scar tissue. Old burn scar tissue. That’s got to hurt.
Paul Eston has blown the whistle on some bad people in Liverpool and gone to ground with vital evidence in the North East of England
Wacker Hughes must track him down. He has not been involved in the violent side of the operation for years but now everything that he has worked for is under threat.
But what made Eston blow the whistle? Will he find out the truth behind his father’s murder? And how did he get those scratches on his back? Only a woman’s fingernails could do that much damage.
Ouch.

A Fair Wack is a fast-paced thriller set in the murky world of crime and corruption in the North of England.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

Sometimes a plain deal is hard to come by, especially when you live in a small town. And when it comes to justice? The innocent can be found guilty, even if the only evidence against them are rumors being spread by their neighbors.

In Northern Louisiana tucked away behind trees and small hills, and not too far from where HBO filmed their original series, True Blood, is the town of Plain Dealing. A population of just over a thousand, everyone knows everyone and it is every residence's right to learn the intimate details of each fellow townie. Because of this rumors are the town's lifeblood and travels faster than the internet. Here in this low poverty space in America, you better not dare make a townie your enemy.

But someone did.

On the night of the town's worst storm, a nurse at the local hospital is found clinging to life. Days later when she dies from her injuries, the town must investigate it's first murder in more than fifty years.

Right away fingers point at two of the doctors who work at the hospital. One who is well respected, whereas the other has a cloud of whispers surrouding him, accusing him of having a secret dark lust toward Women. Is the killer Dr. Shelton or the infamous and mysterious Dr. Tell who also is sole owner of the hospital where many in town work?

Most believe it to be Dr. Tell, but Allison Saunders isn't so sure. As the town's outcast, she knows all too well that many of the rumors floating around aren't true. She also knows that Dr. Shelton is better at hiding the man he truly is. When circumstances dictates she must rely on one of these doctors for her own safety, she goes with her gut and choses Dr. Tell.

Things in town only gets worse when more women are found dead. This turns the gossip mill into overdrive. The town becomes restless, anxious and desperate to find the killer among them, even if it means taking the law into their own hands. If Louisiana justice is what they need, so be it. After all, their sherrif has yet to arrest the man many believe is guilty, Dr. Tell.

While everyone else is trying to solve the mystery, Allison is solving some of her own. Slowly but surely she learn the secret lives Dr. Shelton and Dr. Tell have been living. She's also discovering herself, her strength, her weaknesses, and most of all, for the first time, she's learning what it's like to have someone on her side. The chemistry between she and Dr. Tell leads to an inevitable affair, and sooner than later Allison must ask herself, "Have I set myself up?Will I become the town's next victim?"

Secrets, rumors and erotic discovery. Small town blues. Is anything the truth? Plain Dealing is a mystery/thriller you won't be able to solve and has an ending you won't see coming. It will also make you ask yourself, "In a small town like this, can the innocent get a plain dealing of anything?"

Lots of laughs. Lots of suspense. Lots of OMG! You may even shed a tear in this Amazon International Bestselling novel.

Hi Paul,

Apologies for the delayed response. The answer to your question regarding whether members can vote for more than one title is that they cannot. The purpose of having selecting finalists is to allow our members to pick one title they feel best represents the groups BOTM and the one which has been best represented by the author in the short, posted synopsis. If the title you select wins then you are obligated to read/review, however if the book you vote for doesn't win and you would like to read/review the winning title just contact us via private message and we're confident the author will oblige.

Hope this answers your question.
