Hey guys!

What are you reading/planning to read to celebrate the arrival of the best season* of the year?

*not a personal opinion at all....

My tentative list for September is to finish The Hero of Ages, NPCs, Ship of Magic, and then I'm not to sure.

I'm currently Super Powereds: Year 4, which is amazing. I cannot recommend enough that series. It's superheroes done right! After that, more Drew Hayes with NPCs, and the rest of the series if I like it.

Also reading Blood of the Four on my Kindle. Only got past the first two chapters before getting distracted by Hollow Kingdom (very enjoyable).

When I did my back to back of Hobb, I initially wondered why I’d previously given that Ships book 5stars. That feeling soon disappears so if it hits you, don’t panic.

I’m on the conclusion of a trilogy - Defy the Fates by Claudia ....Gray I think. And the last bit of the last Potter book on my big reread.

Bran | 98 comments I'm trying to read my ever growing pile of unread books, while trying to buy less, at least until I've gone through most of them ;). Currently I'm reading The Monster Baru Cormorant, and I'm digging into my non-fiction stacks with The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

I just finished rereading his Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space & was blown away again. Even after all this time, it was still really worth it. I haven't read 'Demon-haunted World'. Thanks for reminding me. I'll have to get it.

Ok, I think I'll also read Valor.

I love his writing, you can almost hear his voice in your head.

I'm posting here as this is the most read thread.

Who is aware that the group has a Facebook page? Is anyone interested in using it?

message 10: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I don't know if I know that or not. Link?

message 11: by Ian (new)

Ian Hall | 169 comments The bonehunters by steven erikson current book in my my malazan re-read

message 12: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished Hush. It was a fun Pirates of the Caribbean-esque book.

And now I'm tackling Dark Age. It's probably going to take me a while to finish because of different priorities I have, and well ... it's huge!

I should’ve linked! I found the reference to it on the settings page but then just searched Facebook. The badge is the same.

Part of me thinks we should use it as we have it. But then you can as easily get on the GR app. So I’m undecided.

I've never been on Facebook and really don't want to.

message 15: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I think I found the group (and it was something I'd already "liked" at some point in the past), but the posts all seemed to date from 2014 or earlier.

message 16: by Ian (new)

Ian Hall | 169 comments Seems there is nothing past 2014 for the facebook group

No, I'm guessing it was set up by previous mods and presumably people were informed.

message 18: by Palash (new)

Palash (naikon) | 63 comments I like goodreads far more than facebook. Sheer amount of ads and sponsored feeds on facebook just pisses me off.

Coming to the books, I am reading The Fifth Season these days. I also have plans to read The Goblin Emperor sometime this month.

I enjoyed Goblin Emperor - the names are phenomenal. I'm listening to The Republic of Thieves, so good.

Janette | 211 comments I loved The Goblin Emperor. Such a change from battles and sex.

Joseph | 1651 comments Mary wrote: "And yes, Goblin Emperor is great"

It was such a nice change of pace to read a book where the main character was a fundamentally decent person trying to do the right thing under challenging circumstances.

Virginie | 898 comments Mod
Agreed with you all, Goblin Emperor is a breath of fresh air. But.... The names! :)

A child in the year 3 class I had (age 7-8) was complaining that reading was too hard, so I came out with the usual type of encouragement and he pointed out that it was easy for me because I was ‘grown-up’. The next day, armed with my carefully written list, I wrote about 8 names from The Goblin King on the board. After we’d agreed that names are generally easy to read. He quit moaning. Lol

Also remember our book of the month by Jenn Lyons? Red cover, dragons - Ruin of Kings? The sequel is out soon. And I’ve pre-ordered it at the library. I’m hoping that means it’s already ordered and imminent rather than next year.

message 26: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments FWIW, there's an index or glossary or something of Goblin Emperor names at the back of the book.

There are books where I’d really appreciate this and don’t find it on my kindle until the end 🤣

message 28: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Just started up The Throne of Fire.

message 29: by Bran (new)

message 31: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 815 comments NPCs is fun. The series is winding on. . . .

Finished Super Powereds: Year 4, which was a very, VERY solid ending. Can't believe the whole series was first "published" as a webnovel :p
I need a little break from Drew Hayes, so I'll listen to Station Eleven before diving into NPCs.

I'm waiting to be closer to the publication of the sequel to read it... Now that I missed the BOTM read anyway, there's no sense in torturing myself with the wait :p

message 34: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments OK, I'm finished with my current Pendergast binge (Blue Labyrinth, Crimson Shore and The Obsidian Chamber), and, for something completely different, am reading a Magic: The Gathering novella by Kate Elliott: Throne of Eldraine: The Wildered Quest.

message 35: by Palash (new)

Palash (naikon) | 63 comments Damn. After hearing so much praise about Goblin Emperor, I have put The Fifth Season on halt and started reading Goblin Emperor.

Haha! Good luck with the names! In what format are you reading? The narrator of the audiobook, Kyle McCarley, is my second favorite (behind Tim Gerard Reynolds).

I read the kindle. I enjoyed it.

message 39: by Bran (new)

Bran | 98 comments Read and finished The Testaments. I work at a bookstore and we got our copies in early so I sneakily read it (sshhhh). I liked it overall, the different perspectives within Gilead were interesting.

message 40: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I finished Throne of Eldraine: The Wildered Quest, which I enjoyed, and started Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, which I suspect I may love fiercely when all is said & done.

message 41: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Gideon the Ninth, which was excellent!, and am starting some 70s sword & sorcery -- Brian Lumley's House of Cthulhu.

I finished Ship of Magic. No doubt, this was a hands down 5 star. I'll finish this series in January. I started Valor. I know it's because I've read such great books lately and it's not fair, but I'm struggling a little bit with this book. But I'm giving a very sincere effort.

message 48: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished House of Cthulhu and moved on to Tarra Khash: Hrossak!: Tales of the Primal Land, also sword & sorcery by Brian Lumley.

message 50: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished In the Net of Dreams. Wasn't that impressed with it. It was lacking in substance to me.

Just started Firstborn, which is either a short story or a novella. I'm not sure which.
