Lesley (lesleyy) | 193 comments Welcome to the BR for Becky Chambers’ new novella To Be Taught, If Fortunate! As always, please use spoiler tags and let folks know what chapter/part you’re on. Looking forward to the discussion!

Jemppu | 1735 comments Quiet vacation night: did bit of a headstart, and already went through this twice. Chambers' trademark feel-good crew and narration, with a pleasantly grounded premise. Absolutely loved it, and can't wait to see people's reactions.

My book downloaded this morning!

Emma I’m going to join for this. I have it ready to go 😀

Raucous | 888 comments Wow. The book came out this evening and I've already been lapped twice! Go Jemppu!

So far this isn't drawing me in like the Wayfarer books did but I'm still early on in it.

Raucous | 888 comments Aecor, pre-landing (pages 18-20): (view spoiler)

Trike My book arrived via the mail yesterday. :)

Trike After the prologue, a great first line: “I never knew an Earth that was unaware of life elsewhere.” This is exactly why I read SF.

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Just bought it on Kindle, but don’t know when I’ll be able to start it. I’m only about 1/4 through Downbelow Station.

I saw a meme the other day that is perfectly true: “I believe that buying books and reading books are separate hobbies.”

Overall, I felt this was quite profound. No spoilery details, but general impressions of the whole thing: (view spoiler)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Trike, that is absolutely true. And I’m a much better collector of books than a reader of books.

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments My library copy is in processing now, so hopefully it shows up soon for me to read.

Mareike | 1457 comments I finished the first part just now and am really enjoying this so far. Especially (view spoiler)

Amanda | 262 comments Still in the queue for my library copy, been checking the website 3 times a day but no movement.

Trike Amanda wrote: "Still in the queue for my library copy, been checking the website 3 times a day but no movement."

A watched ebook never comes off hold.

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Mine is on my iPad ready to go. If I ever see it in paperback I’ll probably buy that though. I like collecting books. I have definitely collected more than I’ll read lately.

Mareike | 1457 comments I just finished and I think I'll need to sit with this for a while.
I feel a bit blindsided by the ending, but it felt entirely fitting.
For now, I will say that this story moved me very deeply, especially because chambers is so good at creating believable characters and tracing their relationships.

Jacqueline | 2428 comments About a third of the way through. Enjoying it so far. I’ll get back to you when I get a bit further through. And when I can use the computer and spoiler tags.

Also finished and quite surprised by the finale. It is surprising if you remember their earlier steps of disregarding notes of the one, who now has to make an ultimate decision.

Kaa | 1543 comments Thanks. I think maybe it's just the wording that's confusing me? (view spoiler)

There's just something that feels a little off, from time to time.

Oleksandr Zholud | 927 comments re: downloading news (view spoiler)

Ariana | 659 comments Kaa wrote: "...There's just something that feels a little off, from time to time."

I can see that! I think I just assumed it worked a certain way and my brain filled in the gaps/places that lacked clarity.

Trike I have nothing to add other than to agree the news thing is initially confusing.

I did just finish the book, though. I thought it was fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but nothing irritating, either,

message 30: by Kaa (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kaa | 1543 comments Hmm. This was maybe a timing thing, but I didn't love this as much as I was hoping to. I liked the ending, but I never really got over the "quibble over small details" phase (view spoiler)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Ummmm OK.....just got to process this for a while.

Becky Chamber has a thing for utopias. I had a simlimar thought when I read Record of a Spaceborn Few.

Aecor

Finished with the first adventure. It is the kind of philosophical low-key I would expect from this author. Wondering why (view spoiler). Solid character building so far. The science seem legit enough. I readily suspend my disbelief, so on to Mirabilis.

Trike The aspect I had the hardest time with was the typical Super Science stuff where things never break. I was looking at my sneakers yesterday as I was dressing to walk the dogs and was annoyed by the fact part of the right shoe had pulled apart for no apparent reason. Saturday I was going to the store and my year-old car refused to go into reverse, which is concerning.

Yet here is a complicated spaceship that is more than half a century old at the beginning of the story yet everything works flawlessly for years and years. It’s not a huge deal, but I think that was something this story needs for verisimilitude.

Oleksandr Zholud | 927 comments Trike wrote: "Yet here is a complicated spaceship that is more than half a century old at the beginning of the story yet everything works flawlessly for years and years. "

It is because it was made with a heart and not by greedy corporations, who made your sneakers and your car. /sarcasm

Hah! Yeah, this is good point. Especially since the main character is the engineer, it would have added a lot to see her earning her keep, instead of just running checks and helping everyone else.

Raucous | 888 comments Trike wrote: "...Yet here is a complicated spaceship that is more than half a century old at the beginning of the story yet everything works flawlessly for years and years...."

Yeah. I had trouble with that too. They're not that far in our future.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'll have to come back to this later as only a few of the libraries to which I have access have this book, and there's a long waiting list. Never fear, though, I will get to it!

Lesley (lesleyy) | 193 comments I was just notified that my hold is waiting for me at the library. Yay! I hope to pick it up later this week and catch up with the rest of you.

Well that was dumb of me. It’s actually in the book!

I blame the anesthetic they gave me today. Yeah, that’s it. (Not randomly taking hits of meds, I was at the hospital for a procedure today.) Or I’m just dumb. Prolly the latter.

Once again, this text based medium fails to capture facetiousness. 🙂
