Why did the Nazis go to Antarctica before and during WW2?

I've heard the rumors a read a book by a retired WW2 colonel that suggested the Nazis buried the Holy Grail there. It seemed a little Indiana Jones to me. However, the book was written long before Indiana Jones ever came out.
Someone I know named Gerhard who fought for Germany during WW2 just laughs whenever you bring up Ms Schwabenland. Apparently it is true, they weren't looking for anything though. Hitler was taken there (so they say) for a very short period of time before going to South America. The base that was built is meant to be the 'Fourth Reich'
Here's a pretty straightforward history of New Swabia, the German Antarctic colony. The Germans *did* build a secret U-boat base in the Arctic during the war, actually in the Soviet Union. It went undetected until after the war. No one knows for certain why they wanted an ice-bound base there, but it was there all right.

I know about those wild conspiracy theories which say that senior Nazis built an undersea colony beneath Antarctica and even lived there after WW2 ended, but sticking with more factual stuff for a moment- Does anyone know details of what the Nazis were doing down in Antartica?
What were they looking for???
