My price will go by page count and at $1 per page that should average about $250 - 300 per novel for average length works. I may be open to negotiation on price, especially for some projects with greater length. I would prefer not to edit anything less than 10 pages and nothing longer than 600 so that I'm not distracted from my work at JEA and, of course, with my own writing. I would prefer to work with word documents because it's much easier to use that program's comments system to note changes and make notes on areas where some work is needed.
When I edit I look for proper grammar usage, solid plotting, engaging storytelling and areas where the author could use cutting to improve the flow. I don't have a specific preference on genre, but I do reserve the right to reject a project if I feel that I would not be the right editor for the work (conflict of interest or projects I find offensive due to topics like sexual abuse of minors utilized in a sexually titillating manner for example). I prefer to look at the work first and if I take it on, to receive half at the beginning of the assignment and the other half on completion. I take payments via Paypal.
If you would be interested in seeking my help with editing or have any questions please e-mail me at nightshade44637@gmail.com with the heading "Editing Inquiry" with your book title. Thanks.

I charge 0.7 cents a word for a full edit, 0.5 cents a word for a proofread. A full edit of 50,000 words will therefore cost $350 and a proofread $250. I am happy to do an edit of just a few chapters if required, although I will be able to assess the book more effectively if I read it all.
Payment is accepted by paypal.

•Your name
•Your story or excerpt (750 words or less…less is better) pasted in the body of the email (Sorry, but I’m not opening attachments. I’m dreadfully afraid of viruses)
•Title the subject line with the word “Submission” followed by the title of your story. Like this: “Submission: Godzilla vs. Batman”
I will be responding to all submissions and I will let you know if your story has been selected. All genres are welcome, but the focus will be on the literary merit of each piece. If I decide to feature your story, I will also include a short write up with bio information and a brief critique, a great opportunity for anyone looking to increase their visibility.
So, what are waiting for? Send your story to ejamesolson1@gmail.com and check in later this week when I announce the first title to be critiqued on Writing as Art. I look forward to hearing from you!

Anaphora Literary Press is actively seeking cooperative submissions from new writers in all genres (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, art, and all others). Authors purchase 50 copies of their book at 25% off the cover price for resale at full price at readings, to students, to coworkers and the like. The books should meet minimum quality requirements to be accepted. You’d have to send the paragraph bio, summary, marketing plan, and manuscript. I usually respond to submissions on the same day. I also format and design books very quickly, so this is a great option for writers who want to see a fast turn-around and who are not relying on their writing as a source of income. Many writers do profit form this deal if they sell their copies at a 25% profit, or if their book sells well through various international distribution channels I connect them to. Writers receive 50% of all royalties from distributors for the book. I create three editions of each title: hardcover, softcover and ebook. Books are printed in UK, US and AU, and can be shipped anywhere in the world, so international authors are invited. I also include free designs of marketing materials, YouTube trailers and various other services in this basic package. You can see more information about Anaphora’s services in this video, https://youtu.be/92D-qQ4itAs, or on this page on the Anaphora website, https://anaphoraliterary.com/services/.
If you refer writer(s) to Anaphora, you’ll make 10% of the cost of their initial book purchase ($67-75).
I have a PhD in English Literature, and I’ve been running Anaphora for eight years now, releasing over 200 titles, so I have the experience to do a great job with every new release.
I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Sincerely,
Anna Faktorovich, PhD, Director

So you are starting the dreaded hunt for a paid beta reader for your manuscript. I know you are looking at other betas and trying to find the right fit for you and your story, and that’s what I’ll be helping you do in this post.
Since you are here your story falls within the genres I love to read, but I’d like to make a couple of clarifications on genres. I just can’t do Chucky dolls. It’s a childhood phobia that follows me into my nightmares. On the other hand, Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End didn’t mar my early years one bit. I will read YA/NA if the story otherwise falls within my genres. 500 words of a teenaged girl’s daydream of being a swashbuckling space pirate surrounded by 70K words of high school drama – I’m not the beta reader you are looking for.
Am I really a beta reader? That is unfortunately a relevant question. I have heard that manuscript pirates are putting up Goodreads profiles and websites. I have a Goodreads profile and a website you can check (see my link below), but more importantly, I have reviews (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) from Goodreads authors you can contact. I will also do a meet and greet with you by phone or Zoom. Fair warning – I’m a Zoom newbie, but I promise to wear clothes. PM me with any questions or to schedule your beta read.
What can you expect when I beta your manuscript? I will read your manuscript word for word, leaving behind polite, insightful, and sometimes lightly humorous inline comments covering anything and everything that I’m thinking. Then I write a beta report. I go into the details of what’s in my report on my website. For now, know that in this report I will tell you the hard truths you need to know. I tell you the things I don’t really want to tell you, but I do tell you because your story will be better for it. I know that this is an uncomfortable part of your journey. The following comments from authors who have experienced my work describe my personal and respectful approach better than I ever could.
What is my turnaround time like? Since my primary goal is to give you excellent feedback, I don’t rush reads or expedite for an additional fee. I do schedule more time than I need to cover life’s unscheduled interruptions, so I can often start/finish beta reads earlier than projected. Generally, I will schedule 15-17 days for a 100K word manuscript.
About the free samples . . .? For new clients, send me the first 3K words of your novel and I'll beta them for free.
Here is a concise list of my qualifications:
40+ years reading speculative fiction (Science Fiction & Fantasy)
30+ years proofreading and light editing of legal letters and documents
Writing and editing for Bylery Publications, Inc.'s local newspapers (1989-1991)
B.S. in Business Marketing (1986)
