If you would like to be conversational on this subject in a deeper way, here is a list of books that will go far in rounding out your knowledge. I find that once I get a general grasp, and feel I sufficiently know something for myself, I still must go much deeper to be able to confidently and clearly converse on the subject. Please add books to this list if you have any that you believe will be of aid in this way. I have not read any books on the immigration crisis, and do not know if there are any that are reliable. But I feel that a good book in that vein would be great to add to this list.

In the order that I would suggest reading:
1) Mexico - A Land Of Volcanoes From Cortes To Aleman by Joseph H.L. Schlarman
2) The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico by Bernal Díaz del Castillo, A.P. Maudslay, Translator (PSD)
There are a few versions of this. I own the book as named which covers the Conquest through the defeat of the Aztec empire. It is supplemented with the Letters of Cortes where applicable.
Also: Blood Drenched Altars by Francis Kelley (especially for the historical notes. I am not sure if the notes survived to the TAN version or not. I have a first edition of the book)

These next two are pictures of the consequences and spreading of the Black Legend within Mexico.
