Andrea I chose the graphic novel, Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier. To be honest it’s the first graphic novel I’ve read in years, but that is only if Calvin and Hobbes is considered a graphic novel. I was a fan of the artwork, and I think the story line was good, but I just couldn’t’ love this book.

The story starts off with sisters, Cat and Maya and their move to a California coast town, because Cat’s little sister is sick, with cystic fibrosis. Cat, the oldest is less than happy with the move as she does not want to leave her friends. This of course is very relatable. Maya, the little sister, is brave! The move to an ocean town excites her. The stories of ghosts fascinate her. She is very much interested in meeting these ghosts, whereas Cat wants nothing to do with it. I did enjoy Maya getting to know the ghosts but I believe it was at a personal cost, as sometimes happens. Even Cat was able to be friends with them.

The story takes them on an adventure to an arcade on the boardwalk. The girls meet Carlos, a boy who believes in ghosts. There is talk of Dia De Los Muertos and their new town celebrates and welcomes the ghosts of loved ones passed. The girls and Carlos go ghost chasing, Maya and Carlos are happy to find ghosts! Cat not so much. This adventure lands someone in the hospital fighting for their life…If you read it you’ll find out the who, what, why’s of the book. I don’t want to give it all away…

I’ll be leaving this book in my tutoring classroom for the 4th - 6th graders to read, and see what they think. I’d like to have their opinion, as they are huge fans of graphic novels. Looking forward to their point of view.
