I picked it up on impulse at the library - something I rarely do recently, but there was something about the way this was written that instantly sucked me in when I picked up 'for a quick look'. (This impression of compulsive readability was confirmed when I then went on to finish it the same weekend.) It's a chatty and totally accessible, even occasionally gossipy, account of the author's experiences as a therapist who was herself in therapy. This dual perspective works well, allowing her to share her own problems and perspective on therapy as well as her clients' and to dive into some pretty deep issues (the 'ultimate concerns' of death, isolation, freedom, and meaningless) in a book that, despite the sad stories it contains, feels fun to read as well as meaningful to reflect on. I particularly liked a quote she included from Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning: "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."
