Karen's point challenge concept went over quite well in October, so let's continue the fun in November. We're definitely thinking this would be interesting on a larger, Group-Wide scale in 2015, so this is a nice way to get your feet wet.

For the purpose of a mini-challenge, I will post a point system below. Those interested may calculate and post the points they accrue during the month. It's all for the fun of pushing ourselves to get a little more reading into our lives. This particular challenge is nice, because it "plays well with others." :)

The expectation is that we will keep our own score according to the point list posted below. Happy calculating!

POINT SYSTEM

Read a general book: 1 point per book
Read a "shortie" (short story, poem, play): 0.5 points per
Read a group read book: 5 points per book
Read a buddy read book: 5 points per book you read with a buddy
Read a book for the genre challenge: 3 points per book
Read a book for a mini-challenge: 3 points per book
Complete a multi-book mini-challenge: 10 extra points

Definitions:

A GENERAL book is any book you read this month (not covered by another category).

A GROUP READ book is limited to the books nominated and chosen by the group and discussed in the Group Read folder.

A GENRE Challenge book is any book that fits the Genre of the Month.

MINI-CHALLENGE books are 3 points each. There is an additional 10 point bonus for completing a challenge that involves several books.
So, the Word Association Challenge is a 3 pointer, because it only requires one book. But something like the Continental Challenge could get you 34 points upon completion. (3 for each category, plus 10 point bonus for finishing)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Renee (our Challenge Guru), where should I place an informational children's book called Maps and Globes. I know this is short, but it also fits with non-fiction. Thanks!

message 11: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Non fiction is non fiction. I'd count it as a genre book. It's not technically a short story because it's a book for children. :)

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 221 comments I have a small question. Can we use the same book for two different categories or does it have to be used for a single category?

I ask this because I read Marley and Me: Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog for this month, which fits both the Group read book category as well as the genre challenge book category. As of now I have placed it in the group read category but am not sure what the policy is for such cases. Thanks in advance. :)

You can use any NON-group book toward the mini-challenges. And if it's a non-group book, then go wild and use it where you can. :)

I'd have to check back, but I think the no children's books might have been relative to a particular challenge.

message 22: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 916 comments So, I'm re-reading your notes about mini-challenges. For some reason in my head, I had "mini-challenge" as challenges where there is only one book (IE - read a book with a November theme), but now I'm not so sure. Currently I'm doing the TBR challenge which has 12 books in it - can I count each of those books that I read as part of a "mini challenge" book instead of just a general book?

message 23: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
Chase-
We used the term mini-challenge to distinguish them from the monthly Group Challenge. (Which will be Challenges in 2015. No, you can't break up the challenges into mini-mini-challenges. We're offering a 10 point bonus for completing a challenge, no matter the length. However, you also get individual points for the books you read within the challenge. So, the Banned Book Challenge might get you 11 points (10 for completing and 1 for the book). But the Vowel Challenge might get you 16 points (10 for completing and 1 for each book). I say "might" because it's 3 points each (I think) if the book happens to fit the genre of the month.

message 24: by Tracey (last edited Nov 16, 2014 07:49PM) (new)

Tracey | 916 comments Okay I guess I meant that I'm trying to clarify the point system for the "mini-challenge" a bit more.

In your point system above it says "read a book for a mini challenge - 3 points" which would give the vowel challenge 28 points (6 books at 3 points each totaling 18 points and then the 10 points for the completion)

Your most recent post implies that each of the 6 books is only worth 1 point totaling 16 points. This was the system I was employing in October.

Yep. You're right. I forgot we boosted the mini-challenge books to 3 points. That makes it tidier. :)
