It began with a quote from the poem "At every wedding someone stays home" by Dannye Romine Powell. The book itself was about a teenage girl whose father was getting remarried and I think the girl refused to go to the wedding. In the opening chapter it is the day of the wedding and the girl's mother is defrosting the freezer, I remember a description of food "stacked in dripping towers" around the kitchen.

I think it was an adult book but I suppose could have been the older end of YA, as the main character was a teenage girl. Pretty sure it was set in the USA.

The writing style was kind of unusual and reminded me a little of An Invisible Sign of My Own but definitely a different author.
