The Tarkin family has grown to epitomize the quote "Rule through the fear of force rather than force itself.". I know that quote was already discussed via the Bookworms contest, but I felt it needed to be expanded upon here.
Tarkin's uncle Jova particularly has some profound thoughts on the matter in chapter 4: "We're teaching them how to behave in the presence of their betters. The ones who learn, profit from the laws we lay down; the rest die." "dominance is sustained only by bringing order to chaos and establishing law where none exists. On Eriadu, the goal was always to rid the planet of any creature that hadn't grown to fear us, so that we could rule supreme. Up the well, outside Eriadu's envelope, the goal is the same, but with a different caliber of predators."
That actually sounds a bit like Darth Malgus' Dark Side philosophy in Deceived. It's little wonder Tarkin becomes such a key component of the Empire led by two Sith Lords. Tarkin is even indoctrinated at an early age just like Sith (and Jedi).
What do you think about the harsh method of instilling these values in an eleven year old boy?
