Charlie Ravioli (charlie_ravioli) | 611 comments The story of a 3rd year medical student at a renowned hospital in Boston who begins to research the mystery behind multiple, random patients that end up in a coma after run of the mill medical procedures.

This book is somewhat dated (was published in 1977). In keeping with the times (post Watergate and Vietnam) it calls into question the bedrock medical establishment. It's a pretty scary book. It had a nice pace and the characters are pretty well done. Overall I enjoyed it. I've had it on my list to read for quite some time after consistently seeing it on some of the Best of the Best books for Mystery/Suspense/Crime. Not bad for the money (I got it for $1.99 at a used book store).

Really the first of its kind from what I can tell. Interestingly enough, it was also made into a movie which was directed by Michael Crichton. Although the movie seemed to get good reviews, I'm not sure I'm that interested in seeing it as the book suit me just fine.

Booknblues | 12058 comments I read it when it first came out way back when. I read at least one other Robin Cook book and enjoyed it.

annapi | 5505 comments I read this long ago in my college years. Overall I have not been impressed with Robin Cook - IMO Michael Palmer is a far better writer of medical suspense thrillers.

Karin | 9210 comments This was made into a movie. I saw that movie in a drive-in theatre in Osoyoos when a friend of mine spent the summer working there and I went to visit--it was the 3rd of 4 movies that night, but we were tired after three and left--it was Labour Day Weekend (that's how it's spelled in Osoyoos). It was NOT the year it first came out, of course. But it was my first road trip and I, foolish as only c. 20 year old's can be, drove nonstop from he ferry until I was nearly at Osoyoos which is a about 4.5 hours driving the speed limit. That was when I had my white Renault 12 Wagon (memories--you won't know what that car is, so a photo is attached--it was my first car, bought used). This is the exact year and model that I had--it had a standard, pull out choke and fuses that liked to blow. It had the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in in a car and a cool dash set up. I found a better photo, but it was too large to work here.

Okay, back to topic--it was an intense movie!

I've never read anything by Michael Palmer, do you have a favorite or recommendation I should start with?

Thanks for sharing. My first car was a Chevy Nova (1988-89 version). I'm debating whether to watch the movie (Coma), but with limited time on my hands am thinking when have I ever liked the movie better than the book (and I only gave the book 4 stars)...
