Just read this over the weekend. It was looooong, but I was into it. Sometimes I read reviews before I read a book, and sometimes I don't. This time, I read some reviews before I wrote one... and oh boy. Some of the bad ones were so funny! I ended up giving this 4 stars. I do wish more had happened for as long as it was... and I guess I'm going to have to read the next one to see if anything DOES happen.

If you've read this book or haven't read this book, and don't want to, read this review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It sounds like Twilight, which I hated with the fire a 1000 suns (and didn't finish, but I will remain mad forever about the wasted time reading 200 pages of unmitigated shit.) Very telling review!

LOL! While reading her review I thought of Twilight too, which is super odd 'cause I totally didn't get those vibes while reading it. So funny tho!

I should always qualify these comments by saying I don't get the appeal of vampires, werewolves, cat-people, etc. I like my love stories inhabited by living breathing mortal humans. We all have our quirks :)

Pamela | 333 comments I like my vampires and witches! Although never ever Twilight- vampires don't sparkle (I honestly never even tried to read them)

What I really love about the Harkness books is the amount of research and history that goes into her books. I learned so much about alchemy and Middle Ages- and I say that as someone who focused on that era in college! And I went to visit Bunker Hill after she wrote about it in the 4th book, The second book in the series recreates and makes Tudor London come alive in a way I've never seen before, I'm convinced the tv series won't do it justice. The vampire stuff is kinda secondary to the story although there is a lot of witchcraft and lore in the books which I think is cool.

And the reader for the audiobooks is quite good.

Devi | 3 comments I bought this book about 5-6 years ago and tried to read it. Hated it! Then about a year ago I professed my love for Matthew good on FB and a friend told me about the series. I thought I’d give it a try. I loved it! It’s cheesy and campy, but whatevs, it’s great escapist fun! I do feel a bit like a bad feminist sometimes reading it since the Matthew character is such a control freak. However, I’m an adult and can separate this from my reality. I read the first 3/4 of the second one and just had to read something else. I haven’t gone back to it yet, but I’m sure I will. Also, i did. read the first Twilight book and it was awful. It was made more awful knowing that more impressionable young girls (mostly) would be reading it. Discovery isn’t poorly written at all (imo) and i appreciate all the history. I think a lot of people who read it also might not be people who like escapist books or switching to something that’s this genre. Maybe I’m wrong? I mean, has anyone read The DaVinci Code?! That was some pure unrefined dreck!

Matthew Goode you say? Suddenly vampires seem very sexy indeed. (Running off to find out where I can stream this.) Also, nothing anti-feminist at all - feminism is about choice, and I would freely choose to succumb to whatever fate Goode is selling.

He's extremely good as Matthew. The female lead....not as much.
