Around the Year in 52 Books discussion

This is my first full year for the ATY Challenge. In 2019 I started in June.

I’m not planning to read in order. I do like the challenge to broaden my reading list, but reading is my hobby and plan to stick to light-hearted subjects, full of fluff with the random thriller thrown in.

I also like to read seasonal books, such as a Valentines book in February. So I will be using any prompt that the book fits in.

I get most of my books from the library as well, that will add another layer to this challenge, lol :)

I finished The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware for ATY #2, author who’s last name is one syllable.
This triller had me biting my fingernails. I could only read a chapter or two at a time.

I finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt!! Yes, all 771 pages. I liked the book and I’m glad I read it. I just wished it was about 200 hundred pages less. Overall it is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars for me.
ATY # 30 (A book from the New York Times 100 notable books list) and Popsugar #31 (book with “gold” in the title.) This book also counts for my personal challenges of an ABE author and book on the 1001 list.

Read Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain. I enjoyed reading this book.

Read The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide for the prompts of a book set in Japan. This could also be a book that can be read in a day.

As being a person that is owned by a cat, I can relate to parts of this book.

I finished the The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern for ATY # 19 -A Fantasy book.
I really enjoyed this book and gave it 4 1/2 stars.

It was not a book on my TBR, but choose it just to fill the prompt. This book will be the one marked as the best book “I wouldn’t have read with out the challenge” for 2020.

Now I’m adding The Starless Sea to my TBR.

I finished The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho for ATY #8 and PS#6. The story was ok, but just meh. 2 stars.
I expected more....but not sure more of what??

I read My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier. This was a really good book and I enjoyed it. 4 stars. The story was well told. My only problem is Rebecca is my all time favorite classic.
The book can be used for ATY # 11 or 18, haven’t decided yet.

I listened to The Scent Keeper by Erica Bauermeister. The audio version was very good. The story was told in wonderful detail. 4 stars
This book was read for ATY #16 - A book set in a rural or sparsely populated area. PS #10 - A book recommended, it is Reese's February 2020 BOTM pick.
I love the cover of this book, the pastel colors are beautiful.

I just finished The Wives by Tarryn Fisher for the ATY #9, a book that can be read in a day.
This audio book was a train wreck that I just couldn’t turn off. 3 1/2 stars.

I listened to Summer by Edith Wharton. This was a short story published in 1917. This was a easy read book for a classic read.

I used it for ATY #37 - Two books that are binary opposites. The opposite book I've chosen in Winter by Ali Smith.

This book also worked for my side challenges - ABE Author and 1001 book list.

I finished on audio Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. I enjoyed the book and give it 4 stars. This is the first book I've read by this author and will be reading more.

This books fills the prompts ATY#43 - Plague & PS# 19 - in Canada.

I enjoyed the story line of a virus epidemic, but maybe not at the same time that the coronavirus is headlining the newspaper and evening news every day. And I have a cruise planned in a couple of months.

I read The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. I had both the paper book and audio.

Considering this book was first published in 1895, I feel a higher praise for the book than the actual enjoyment I received from reading it. The small book of about 100 pages felt like it weight 20 pounds. The long paragraphs and the detailed description of the science/math was too much for me. 2 starts

I'm filling the prompt - PS# 38 - A book by a journalist. The beginning of the book had a time line of H.G. Wells' life (which I actually enjoyed reading.) It stated that he was a journalist!! Which I did not know when I started this book. This book is also on the 1001 book list.

I picked up my library hold of You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks.


The book was released March 3rd. It’s so shiny and new!! I’m about 100 pages in and loving it.

I finished You Are Not Alone. It did not disappoint!! 4 1/2 stars.

I finished Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. for the Summer challenge - Sci-Fi.

Wow, what a strange book. My daughter read it during high school and said it was one of the better assigned readings.

It's also a book on the 1001 book list challenge. I'm glad I can check off Vonnegut, I don't believe I will be reading any of his other works.

I read Sunrise on Half Moon Bay by Robyn Carr for a nice easy read between the chapters of Love in the Time of Cholera.

I finished The Summer Deal by Jill Shalvis. I enjoyed this book 4⭐️. The story was interesting, more than fluff
