Forgotten 20th Century Slang - Part Two
Duration: November 1 - January 31, 2020
Tasks:
1. Classy Chassis
So you want to tell a lady she’s got a great body but you don’t want to sound like a pig? Just compliment her classy chassis. Unless she’s your grandmother, she’ll have no idea what you’re talking about.
Example: “Don’t take this the wrong way, Lucy, but you’ve got a classy chassis.”
Read a book where the MC is a gorgeous woman OR with a woman on the cover.
2. Hunk of junk
When your car has a few too many miles on the odometer, and the engine sounds like a two-pack a day smoker, it may be on the fast track to the junkyard.
Example: “That’s your car? Seriously? It’s a hunk of junk!”
Read a book where a character drives a beat up car OR with a title that has two rhyming words.
3. Peepers
It’s as if everybody who puts on a pair of glasses suddenly becomes one of Jim Henson’s muppets. Seriously, doesn’t Peepers sound like an adorable monster who lives next to Mr. Snuffleupagus?
Example: “What do you think of my new peepers? They’re bifocals.”
Read a book where a character wears glasses OR whose title begins with P.
4. Far out
If something is far out or “out of sight,” it’s meant as a compliment. You approve of it. But only in the figurative sense. It’s not literally outside your field of vision or defying gravity.
Example: “Far out! The game has a hidden cow level.”
Read a book with a two word title OR whose author's first or last name is three letters long.
5. Bummer
When things aren’t going your way and you’re a little sad about it, that’s a bummer. It comes from the phrase “bum rap,” which means to be treated unfairly. A bummer is never deserved.
Example: “She cancelled our date again. What a bummer.”
Read a book with a character that gets bummed out by something OR with a six in the page count.
6. Gimme some skin
Don’t get any crazy ideas. If someone asks you to give them some skin, they’re merely asking you to shake hands.
Example: “Hey man, gimme some skin!”
Read a book where characters shake hands OR with a hand on the cover.
7. What’s your bag?
We’re not talking about luggage. Your bag symbolizes your problems, the mysterious annoyance that’s making you so obviously upset.
Example: “Dude, you don’t have to yell at me! What’s your bag?”
Read a book where a character is visibly upset OR with a 12 in the publication date.
8. The heat
In the 1960s, you didn’t get in trouble with the police. You got in trouble with the heat.
Example: “Slow down—it’s the heat!”
Read a book where a character is with the police OR with a title that begins with THE.
9. Old lady
It may sound like a pet name for your grandma, but old lady is actually a term of endearment for your girlfriend or wife.
Example: “Nah, can’t hit the clubs tonight. My old lady is waiting for me at home.”
Read a book where the MC is a girlfriend or wife OR where a character gets called a special nickname by their loved one.
10. Hang loose
If you’ve opted to spend your day taking it easy and relaxing, then you are officially hanging loose.
Example: “Nah, I'm gonna hang loose today.”
Read a book where a character spends the day taking it easy and relaxing.
