Please forgive any typos, I'm writing this review on my phone lol
I was so stoked to finally read Butler (I realize I should have picked Kindred as I hear so many great things about it). From reviews I've read for Fledgling, this was the last book Butler wrote and stands out as the most unlike all of her previous works. I hope that is the case.
First and foremost, I was REALLY not a fan of Shori (who is technically a 53-year-old vampire/human hybrid, but LOOKS like she's about 11 or 12) have sex on multiple occasions with Wright (20-something). No. No thank you. I understand that Shori's venom essentially takes away his free will to an extent (a concept that is explored in many ways in this book), but we could have explored it without the quasi-pedophilia.
Sadly, I found this book to be incredibly boring. The plot is taken up by Shori not knowing anything and asking other Ina to help her learn, which leads to long paragraphs of complicated knowledge about the Ina. I'll give it to Butler, she really went deep in creating her vampire lore. But the entire book is full of info and only a small amount of it is used later on.
The last third of the book is mostly the vampire court, which sounds fun, but I found it to be boring as well. It almost feels like this was a set up for a series, but I was so bored I don't know if I would seek out the sequels, if they ever existed.
It's a 1/5 from me. Huge potential, wasted.
