What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Read this book in 2018. Stumbled on it at the library.

The story is told in parallel... "real world" and "fiction worlds".

The real world authors are writing back and forth in email about the fact that their stories keep changing after they've written them.

The fictional characters have figured out that they are just that, fictional characters, and (if I remember right) are trying to manifest themselves. They keep moving between different stories (through a nexus library of sorts) and bring this fact of their reality to different characters.

The characters find paper notes to themselves... I can't remember if they are notes from other characters, or from the authors that are trying to communicate with their wayward creations.

Jon, what type of books/articles do they write? Can you describe some of the plots/characters that change?

Where do the authors live?

We don't know anything about the authors, they just communicate with each other through email.

some of the characters are on a space ship, I think one is a detective, and another is from a romance novel.

Is it something by Roderick Townley?

Don't know if there is a particular story like this, but this sounds similar to some books by Charles de Lint. It also reminds me a little of Sophie's World

Scalzi's Red Shirts is about fictional characters who figure out that they are fictional, but I don't recall that their stories shift around, or that they communicate by email.
