Welcome to The Diviners Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on November 18th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each week we will be reading by chapters. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

Oh I'm excited to see what you guys think about this - I've just finished Lair of Dreams!

So I started it today. I'm not a fan of the no numbers on the chapters, which'll make reading 6 chapters a bit of a problem, but except that I'm LOVING it! 😍

I think the thing I like the most is the year; I love the idea of 1920's things why I don't really know, but it sounds so fun and it is described that way.

The way the story started was 😁😁 I don't remember readings something with ghosts (chances are i read something just don't remember it) but this... I'm so excited to see what'll happen.
I like Evie, she's such a strong headed character and I can't wait to see what mischief she's up to.

So I’m probably not going to start it until Thursday maybe Friday.... this week is just a bit hectic so I was thinking maybe we can stretch the buddyread into the first week of December? So I have a bit more time to read it. But if you don’t want to do that that is also completely fine and I will just push myself to the max to stay caught up.

I am also super late because I still haven't received the book, so having more time would be great!

Chapter 1
(view spoiler)[ okay but the writing style? It's gorgeous! It's clever! Using the wind to give us a swooping panoramic of those years, I felt every detail as if I had been watching it through a camera in a movie! I admire this so much! (hide spoiler)]

Today I'll continue this. And I'm excited to go back to the 1920's world :D

Which "chapter" did you reach? I am also re-starting to read it today, so far I am at "It's just the Bennington, dear"

I stopped somewhere in Passing Stranger, i think I was a few pages in.

I have a few more pages before finishing And Death Shall Flee, but I won't be reading them today. I have to say that I hate that the chapters don't have numbers but only names. I have no idea on what "chapter" I am.

The 1920's really intrigue me it seems so fun, but also I have questions: was going out and dancing the only thing they did, because Evie makes it sound like that and that people mostly felt bored, at least that's the vibe I got from Theta.

On The Sea: (view spoiler)[I really want to know if things were done like this. Like, her uncle and the detective are okay with a 17yo going to a crime scene and getting near the actual murder... what? But her touching Ruta's stuff was a) stupid, cuz evidence.. i don't know how much forensic was in play but still b) she got into Ruta's head.. I guess that'll give her nightmares but it'll show useful somewhere down the road. (hide spoiler)]

Since I listened to the book while working I wasn't able to mark the chapters where I wanted to say something--I could've searched it later, but I'm choosing to type this and go read so.. About Sam Lloyd (view spoiler)[I'm intrigued to see why's he interested in the girl that was in the papers. Also I like how Evie is disliking him so much.. which we know will probably end in a love thingy. (hide spoiler)]

How are you doing with the book Petronilla?

I'm on the chapter that's called The Angel Gabriel

since this all that I want to say is going to give away some things from the story that may or may not be important I'm going to put it in a spoiler tag

(view spoiler)[I have to say that I like that she and Jericho and Sam are somehow helping solving the murders, that type of story is my jam.

Also I like how all the diviners are starting to connect. Evie-Sam, Evie-Theta, Theta-Memphis. I would like to know more about the previous diviners, since there probably were because John continued with the offerings (at least I think it's John that's making the offerings).

At first I liked Evie, I mean I still do, but in the beginning she was the type of character I would despise because of the way she was acting... but thankfully to the 1920's I just shrugged it off because it sounded natural. Mabel not wanting to spend time with her because she was a bad friend wasn't a surprise and even though I liked her I rooted for Mabel because it was a dick move and she was acting like a bad friend. With that being said I hope they'll be friends again. (hide spoiler)]

I am not there yet but I also have no idea exactly how far behind I am -_- my epub version lacks an index and without chapter numbers it's a mess

Right now I am at "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and also really excited, I want to know so many things O.O

If I counted it right the horsemen are the 9th chapter.

I have four chapters left and I'll finish them in a bit.

The Belly of the Beast (view spoiler)[I'm not a religious person, but I really enjoyed that theme here; trying to bring the Beast and destroy the world that's something I was really into. Also the calling of the Beast reminded me so much of the movie Split. (hide spoiler)]

I got to On the Sea and I wish she had seen more...
But I am also hoping that her uncle might notice her ability and give some explanation.

Regarding Lloyd, right now I hope they don't end up together because it would be such a cliché. However if we get some sweet character development for Lloyd and his depth goes beyond "standard Rogue" I will go down with this ship

I'm laughing because just after posting that comment I started reading The Hearts of Men and (view spoiler)[bam! Sam Lloyd's first POV. Which was very interesting and gave me lots of new questions. Why can Evie see him? If she can see him because of her gift does that mean that gifted people's powers can't work on each other? If this hypothesis is true, he can't redirect her thoughts and she can't get a feeling from his things. And she actually didn't see a thing when she took his jacket and saw what was in the pockets, but idk maybe she just was not trying. We'll see (hide spoiler)]

The Hearts of Men (view spoiler)[ Hmm, I haven't thought much about that. It could be because she too has powers that she can partially see him. As for the powers not working on others with powers I don't think that works, I don't remember what chapter it was but there's one chapter with one character (I don't want to spoil it) where Evie does her object reading and she's able to see that persons past. I just finished it. And now I don't know how to rate it (the fact that I haven't written a review yet but am thinking about the rating is not important 😅) I loved it a lot whenever I was listening to it I was smiling like a fool but also I felt like something was missing for me to be totally bought. I really liked those singing parts and now, as I'm typing this, I'm listening to some 1920-1930's music.

Evie and love interest (to be read towards the end of the book. you'll know when it happens) (view spoiler)[ I was not expecting her to feel something towards Jericho, like I said I expected her to have a thing with Sam because the way they were acting...so yeah. (hide spoiler)]

The Buffalo Project Who is Bill? What is he? I wanted to ask that when he attacked Isaiah but I don't know in which chapter that happened so. I'm really intrigued to find out more about him. Also, not to be shocked in this chapter there's a killing of a cat.

So in the audio book the singing parts are actually sung? How is Naughty Billy's whistling?
I need to find some audio trace because so far I have been imagining the creepiest thing ever and I am too curious to hear it

yes, there's singing :D too bad it's so short. Naughty Billy... Naughty was only prescribed to John if I'm not mistaken and overlooked it. There was no whistling... but that would've made listening to it sooooo much creepy. Damit why didn't anyone think of it?

Hi friends, I stopped reading the book because I hit a reading slump and just can't summon the will to finish it. Which is a pity because I liked it so far!
I think I will pick it up again in the future and maybe go back to this thread to look at your thoughts; I am sorry for not being much company during this buddy read
