F. FAQ
Q: Are there any differences between the 4 boards?
A: While names of squares are different between 4 boards, they are mostly identical with only distinct difference being the Shelves square has different sort of list.
Q: What if I want to join in mid-year?
A: You are welcome to join in anytime
Q: What if I want to stop playing?
A: We would appreciate it if you would let us (moderators) know your intention to stop playing rather than just dropping off without a word and please let us know whether you’re just taking a short break or if we should archive your movement thread.
Q: What if I'm not sure if I can commit for the long run?
A: Feel free to join in anyway but please let us know if you wish to stop playing
Q: Exactly how many books do I have to read for each square?
A: You only have to read one (1) book per square. You can ask for 3-5 books to be picked for you to give you an option but you only have to read 1. You can read all of them, if you like.
Q: How long do we have to read our book?
A: Generally, you have 4 weeks to read a book BUT we’ve only put this timeframe on so you could keep going along the Board. There are no penalties if you are late.
Q: Is there a limit to size of book?
A: None whatsoever
Q: How would you know if it's the "Biggest Thickest Meanest" book on my shelf?
A: We don't! As always, we rely on honor system in our challenges. Your conscience will direct you better than we can ;)
Q: Can I add / remove books at any time?
A: Please only undertake "maintenance" when you are in-between rolls (ie. you have received all your picks and are in your 'reading time' before having to roll again for your next move).
Q: How many books do I have to have on my Bookopoly Shelf?
A: We suggest within the range of 30-90 books. At least 30 books so that there is more than enough choices for the pickers and about 90 books maximum so it doesn't become too unwieldy when browsing.
Q: Can I plan ahead?
A: Refer to D. 5. above
Q: What do you mean by "datestamp"?
A: To note the date:
*at each roll of die; and
*when you determine the book you will read; and
*when you've finished reading your book.
Q: What if I can't finish the book I'm reading for the square?
A: You are required to read at least 1 book per square so read another book that has been picked for you. Or, if you're on a task-related square, pick another book that fits the task.
Q: What if I can't finish any of the books picked for me?
A: Essentially you owe some 'rent' so you'll need to finish reading a book picked by that participant so go ahead and request one additional book.
If you cannot finish that additional book, then you go to debtor's jail (not the square) and must read the largest book on your Bookopoly Shelf to get out.
After completing that book, play resumes from last rolled square.

Just a note to say that this edition was inspired by a game I was playing obsessively on my phone called, Board King, and if you're curious, you can see how it's played here: https://youtu.be/9YkSNqBmpZw
(It's not my video - just one I found online)
Also, it wasn't easy to find boards with good digital image that we can read names of properties etc so these 4 are random picked out of a handful that we found (about 8 in total were usable).
If you happen to see any type of Monopoly boards with good digital images, please do let us know as I'd love to start an archive of links for future uses, TIA ;)

I just found a monopoly board archive for you. Not all of them have good pictures, but you can take a look there.
Just a tip for everyone regarding choosing your main board. The big difference for you will be when you land on an "S" square. You might want to read the list of shelves for each board to help in your choices.
Go to Bookopoly - Travel Edition in list of games. Click on that folder to open it up. Select "new topic" and create your thread there.

Thank you!
Amy, your thread created twice. I deleted one. Please check the other to be sure it is still OK.

I bet you can tell I'm looking forward to the new bookopoly edition :D

From 2019 edition: "If all outstanding requests are from the same player, please only respond to one.
(ie. if there are 2 requests outstanding but both are from Bea then only respond to 1. However if the 2 requests outstanding are from separate players, say Bea and Charity, then please respond to both, if you have the time)"
Marina (Sonnenbarke) wrote: "I think I haven't seen anything about book requests by the same person having to be responded by two different people - is this rule still on?
From 2019 edition: "If all outstanding requests are ..."
I'll let Tien answer whether it still holds as a rule, since there will be fewer people available to respond on each board than there have been in the past. But even if it's not a rule, I think it's a good idea to get responses from different people when possible. It's a different set of eyes looking at your shelf and spotting what might be a good choice.

I agree with Susan. I like the idea of different people picking. However, please hit reply on the request you are picking for so that it is clear which roll is being addressed.

I did leave off that rule on purpose and my thoughts as per Susan's (ie. less people to respond as we're spread out between 4 boards). My thoughts were that people will be on GR at different times of day and some (unlike yours truly) don't even get on GR every day. So, while it may be a lovely idea to have different people picking for you, depending on the board & people involved, this may or may not be feasible? I know I'm mostly impatient to get my picks so if you're happy with waiting for a different player to pick for you (but not a moderator who's supposed to be responding after 24 hours has passed), you should state that in your post?

One question about traveling to other boards: can I return to my main board after I've traveled another board entirely and passed the GO square or do I have to land precisely on the GO square of that board to are allowed back onto mine...?

Paola, I think this will answer your question:
"Participant then will pick another board to travel to and go around that board ONCE until they either rolled to land on OR pass the GO square. Then, they will return to their Main Board (and start again from GO square)."

It's no problem at all... just sign up here when you're ready :)

I drew this chance card: 10. Advance to Go & travel to another Board [when you return, roll 2 die & accordingly move forward on The Board] OR if you're already visiting, Advance to Go & return to your own Board.
I understand that I am to travel to another board...but, what does the part in [] mean? Does it mean that I roll when I arrive at the new board? Or does it mean that I return to my own board?
I think this needs to be reworded. I am going to travel and will roll when I ARRIVE.

"when you return [to your Main Board]", proceed as you would normally play, ie "roll 2 die & accordingly move forward on The Board" - this was put in as clarification because you'll be on "GO square" when you return...

To me it was unclear as well if you had to go or not.
Lusie wrote: "Maybe it's clearer if you say that after finishing the round you go back to your own board where you start on go and have to roll again.

But sometimes, you may not finish the round because if you draw this card while visiting, you'd be sent back to your Main board.

May I suggest a change:
10. Advance to Go & travel to another Board, roll 2 die & accordingly move forward on The Board OR if you're already visiting, Advance to Go & return to your own Board and proceed by rolling 2 die.

oh, I don't know about that & very interesting thing to have noticed :) Mysteries are the first type of books I read (a family thing) so never really got over it lol

I need a clarification about choosing for others.
My main board is Australia, but right now I'm visiting Canada. I know I don't respond to any requests on the Canadian board. But should I or should I not choose for someone who's making a request from the Australia board (e.g., Beth, message # 121)?

You can still respond to requests made on your Main Board even if you're currently visiting another board.

Thanks. Will do.
Thanks. Will do.

LaurLa, I am facing this exact situation on my next roll. I had decided that I would roll and where I landed on the traveling board would be where I would be on my home board. Kinda like on the GO space I would teleport to my own board. Understand?
However, Tien, is the last word on interpretation, so let's see what she says.

Bookopoly is a boardgame for bookworms based on the classic Monopoly. For our purposes, we will only keep the essence of the boardgame which is to roll 2 dice to move along the board and follow the instruction for reading. There will be no cash exchanges etc.
We are introducing a NEW twist this year by having 4 boards and while you have to pick 1 to be your Main board, there will be opportunities to travel to other boards. Please read these new instructions carefully.
Everybody is a winner in this challenge! There is no finishing line as such nor do you have to collect cash/points but we all get to tackle our TBR.
Before we begin, however, you MUST have a dedicated Shelf for this challenge. This Shelf is where participants will pick books for you to read during the challenge.
Please keep this Shelf up to date throughout the challenge. By all means, put all of your books-to-read-for-other-challenges here! But also remember to remove those you've read or do not wish to read any longer. I would also suggest to include, for at least half of your Shelf, easily accessible books, for reasons which will be clear later on.
To sign up for this challenge, please provide a link to your Bookopoly Shelf in this thread: Sign Ups]. Please also note which Board is your chosen Main Board.
You may compile your shelf now but Official Start date of this challenge is December 1, 2019. Challenge will run up to November 30, 2020.
B. The Twist
We have chosen a travelling theme this year and these 4 boards are picked at random:
1. United Kingdom - The Board
2. Panama - The Board
3. Canada - The Board
4. Australia - The Board
Each participant will choose a Main Board. Participants then will go around their Main Board throughout the length of the challenge and only ‘travel’ to other boards when they:
1. Land on GO square; OR
2. Are instructed to go to GO square (Chance/Community Chest tasks)
Participant then will pick another board to travel to and go around that board ONCE until they either rolled to land on OR past the GO square. Then, they will return to their Main Board (and start again from GO square).
Each board will have book request threads for which only those participants whose Main Board it is can respond to requests. Moderators will assist with all boards in responding to requests when they have not been responded to by other participants for approximately 24 hours.
