I am hoping to revisit a favorite book of mine, Memoirs of a Geisha, probably starting in December. As I was thinking about it, I realized, most of the book takes place in our time period. I was wondering if anyone would want to join me? I've read this book twice, and I love it! My brain is turning to mush with all the writing I've been doing, so I'm looking for something good for December: chocolate for the brain (yes, I intend to read My Man Jeeves, but that's pretty short).

Nigeyb | -2 comments ^ Thanks for the offer Jennifer. I have too many other things to read during Nov/Dec (including our Jan poll winning titles and a hot read of Handsome Brute with Susan) so will decline.

Jennifer...did you do the re-read?

If not and you're up for it now I might join you. I love that book!

I haven't reread it. I've got a bunch of books going at the moment, but if I get the urge to come back to it, I'll let you know.

Val Has anyone read the non-fiction memoir of a geisha, Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki? (US title Geisha, a Life)
It mainly takes place within the BYT time-frame.

No, but I've often thought about giving it a go. Have you read it? What did you think...would you recommend it?

Val I have read it, a very long time ago. It was a way of life different from Western cultural traditions, very bound by ritual and interesting because of that, but I don't remember liking the style of writing or translation much. I would recommend it, but not strongly.
I disliked the novel, although that shouldn't affect liking or disliking the memoir.

Good to know...I must admit that the writing style of non fiction can make the difference for me as to whether I stick with the read or not!
