Mark Mortensen Beth Macy tells a great story in "Factory Man". I casually promoted that book today to visitors in our manufacturing facility. :-)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 18 comments For the next Read Smart program, Dr. Rob Dunn, associate professor of biological sciences and author of the recent book The Man Who Touched His Own Heart: True Tales of Science, Surgery, and Mystery, will join us to discuss his book on Wednesday, June 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Cameron Village Regional Library, 1930 Clark Ave. We have only had authors come a few times, so this is a great opportunity to meet the author.

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 18 comments The Read Smart program just announced its January and February reads:

Wednesday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m.: H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald

About the book: H is for Hawk tells Macdonald's story of the year she spent training a goshawk in the wake of her father's death. Having been a falconer for many years, she purchases and trains Mabel, a young goshawk to help her through the grieving process.
Scholar: Dr. Laurel Degernes, professor of avian medicine, NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine

Tuesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.: Brush Back by Sara Paretsky

About the book: To help celebrate Wake County's The Big Read program of The Maltese Falcon, we will read a book in the "noir" tradition, but with a modern twist. Sara Peretsky's hardboiled private eye V.I. Warshawski doesn't let anyone stand in her way of getting to the truth.
Scholars: Dr. Deb Hooker, director, women's and gender studies and Dr. Mary Wyer, associate professor of psychology (and mystery fan!)

All events take place at the Cameron Village Regional Library, 1930 Clark Avenue, Raleigh.

Pamela Poole (pamelapooleart) As an author/artist local to Raleigh, I'm looking for venues that might like to schedule a "meet the author" presentation. My 2nd novel in the Painter Place Saga, Hugo, was just released (about Hurricane Hugo in 1989) and is available now as a Goodreads giveaway for January. For more info about me or my art and novels, you can go to my main website at www.pamelapoole.com. Looking forward to meeting more readers and writers in NC!
