Atwater back at work; Nosworth tells Atwater that phone calls featuring a female voice asked for him, saying goodbye. Atwater arranges to pay a visit to Mr Nunnery, Susan's father. Atwater turns up at Nunnery's flat, and asks after Susan. Mr Nunnery tells him where Susan is. There follows a discussion abut mutual acquaintances. Atwater eventually leaves, feeling sad and regretful. He bumps into Fotheringham, and lends him ten bob. He then makes his way to a bar, where he sees Pringle, Harriet (with a new man on her arm), and Walter Brisket. Harriet asks them all to accompany her to a party, and they all agree.
