I'm watching the NFL (American football) this weekend. One of the best teams is called the Baltimore Ravens, so named as explained by Wikipedia:'The name "Ravens" was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven. Chosen in a fan contest that drew 33,288 voters, the allusion honors Poe, who spent the early part of his career in Baltimore and is buried there. As the Baltimore Sun reported at the time, fans also "liked the tie-in with the other birds in town, the Orioles, and found it easy to visualize a tough, menacing black bird."'
I found myself wondering if any other author has a professional sports team named after, or influenced, by his writings. It's quite a statement on Poe's reputation and, to me, an honor.

I just moved to Tallahassee, and most people here are into college football more than NFL. Gets a bit cringey because of, you know, teams still using Native Americans as mascots. :-(

However, as Wikipedia reports:
"The use of names and images associated with Seminole history is officially sanctioned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida."
My understanding is that they sanction it because the Seminole Tribe is paid a fee and a certain percentage of royalties from products so they make money from the images. As a result, the more stuff with the logos get sold, the more money the Seminole tribe itself makes.
